Sunday Stream (124) ~ Irrigating the Mind

Irrigating the Mind
[Astronomy places the moon in the sign of Cancer today. Astrology says that is a good time for planting, watering or to go fishing, Cancer being a water sign.]

In astrology, things are divided into segments. It's a segmented belief system based upon observation. Twelve signs divided into 30 degree sections, each section given a astronomical sign based upon the location of twelve constellations that rotate around the earth. Astrology begins with the sign of Aries, a fire sign, one of three out of the twelve. Aries begins in Spring in the northern hemisphere. This is considered the time of new beginnings. From Aries the rotation goes next to Taurus, an earth sign. Then it proceeds to Gemini, an air sign on to Cancer. These four different 'qualities', fire, earth, air and water are repeated three times - 4 x 3 = 12 signs. Twelve x 30 degrees = 360 degrees or the full cycle of rotation.

Lots of numbers, lots of names, lots of divisions - 3 fire signs, 3 earth signs, 3 air signs and 3 water signs = 12 signs. The fire signs and the air signs are considered infertile or masculine while the earth and water signs are considered fertile, feminine signs... that old yin/yang duality.

This 'lots of numbers' gets into what astrology calls Natal Charts: the position of the planets at the time of one's birth. Where we are born, the exact location, the space into which we came, can be located to the exact longitudinal and latitudinal location at the exact day, hour and minute we took our first breath. Not surprisingly, each known planet within our solar system was in an exact position. Once these planets are charted, this chart becomes our Natal Chart, unique to ourselves. Nobody or no thing occupies our space. We are as unique as the 'frozen' position of the planetary positions were at the time of our birth along with the location on the earth where we were given birth.

Over the years I have observed the great myth of so many that dismiss anything about astrology simply due to the fact that all they know about it is "I'm a Taurus...' or "I'm a Scorpio and the newspaper said I'll find happiness with a stranger today" or some such limitation. When we have these very unique natal charts, that signifies a tremendous variation within all of us. We are not just Gemini or Aquarian... we have (according to astrology) the other planetary influences going on. Our being a 'Capricorn' or 'Virgo' is only the astronomical location of the Sun at the time of our birth. The Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto... each have according to astrology, varying degrees of influence upon us... from very personal, closer planets to generational for the distant planets.

Let me say now that I'm only an amateur of astrology. I liken myself to say, still in the first year of college with it. I don't have a BS degree (although that may be arguable for many, depending upon how 'BS' is described! ). I'm aware of the more complex areas of astrology there are but have little to no authority to speak on those levels.

A parallel can be made with astrology and religion - there are different schools of thought, There are different opinions on the interpretations within the schools of astrology and religion. We humans, given our unique identities, follow our attractions. We are followers of persuasions. In so doing, our persuasions may become persuasive enough for others to follow. Followers become leaders who are followed by followers that may become leaders. It's a cycle. Astronomy is the observation of the cycles of planets and stars. Astrology is the observation of cycles of planetary influence on both hu'man and hu'manity. (There are other schools of astronomy besides the human cycles). Religions are cyclical. Some schools rise up to satisfy large groups or nations for a time. Like all things in life, every thing is subject to cycles. Some call this the 'Wheel of Life.' Being likened to a wheel makes life circular or cyclical... like a wheel life turns as does our own planet. Some positions the turns make may leave us distraught and unhappy. While other spots within the cycle may reward us.

It's not my persuasion to invest a great deal of my time into either astrology or religion. There are those who have a much stronger attraction to those things that myself. But I have been attracted to both enough to realize it's not the school that teaches me but rather from the school I learn the tools to further know myself.

Our world that we, hu'manity, has discovered thru the sciences, the philosophies, the religions, the metaphysics, the arts and even the politics has given us so much information that it can disrupt us rather than assist us. This too is cyclical. Despite the fact that we are learning machines, we have to have time to digest our information lest we become uncomfortable and confused by the massive amount of information available to us. We can easily become gluttonous at the banquet of information. If we see information as one thing rather than a collective of things that we can (and should) be more selective in choosing according to our attraction; we can lose ourselves in the flood of desire to 'have it all.' This can only bring a dis-ease. We may lose a connection with our being and this in turn may very well make us sick... our views, our opinions, our lives may get caught up in information gluttony where none of it really makes any sense at all. That's when we don't know who we are. We're washed away in the flood of info, the cacophony of opinions drowning out our inner voice.

When our own Wheel of Life becomes a Carousel of Madness, we struggle to stay aboard. We grasp for control. But soon find that despite all the information, all the opinions and suggestions, that there is only one way to regain our senses. Unplug. Drop out. Let go. Retreat.

No science, no philosophy, no metaphysics, no religion, no arts, no politics... no THING is necessary (not to be confused with 'nothing is necessary') but to slide off the spinning wheel that's out of control for you. Return to that space of innocence within you... your inner-being is only inside you waiting to be all around you.. surrounding you with who you really are. What you've always been and will always be. Some call it your 'original face' before you were born in this life at this time. No desire. Non-attachment. Your Being irrigated, restored... revitalized... reborn: assimilated into the phenomenon called Life... no longer a part of life but One with Life.

Thoughtful column.

I have been a perpetual skeptic and astrology is one area that I have some problems with. The more that I'm skeptical of it, the more I believe in it. I know it's just generalizations and random predictions, but I wonder why all the great loves of my life have been Cancers. Maybe it's because they quench my Sagittarius fire.

Thx, L'Rod...

There's so much more to astrology than I ever thought. I've never bit into everyone's 'shpeil' that interprets signs and aspects... but I have come across over the years some people that interpret with an authority and clarity that literally blew my mind. When that happens it's not easy to dismiss the subject entirely. It's one of those things that has to be approached with an open mind with no preconceptions. After all, astrology has been around the block more than any science for some reason deeper than I'd be willing to attempt to dispute.

Years ago I had read about a fellow named Alan Leo who, at the time, was rapidly becoming quite well known in astrological circles with the many books he had written. The story was that he came into astrology with the intent of disproving it and the deeper he went into it, the more he became convinced of it's accuracy. There are probably many stories out there that are similar.

But like all things in life, one must beware (be aware)... there have always been charlatans playing the game, (like doctors, lawyers and politicians play their game), on the public.

I´ve been biking today in the country -perfect sunny autumn day!- seeing also the Carcarañá coast after the flood.
