Monuments to the neocon empire-to-come, such bases newly built across the "arc of instability," elaborately linked into an American global communications network, were never meant for the likes of Iraqis. Of course, our mega-base in Danang wasn't meant for the likes of Vietnamese either.

i remember when i went on R&R to Sydney
I hitched a ride from Cam Ranh to Da Nang
I slept overnite in an R&R holding compound
it was a bunk barracks
open to air with mosquito nettings around the bunks
i could see right next to these barracks
across a barrier of coiled concertina wire
Vietnamese peasants at work in the rice fields
slow, concentrated, with buffalo standing grazing


and Halliburton at Camn Ranh and also Vung Tau
americano contractors

KBR had their own aircraft including C-7's under the civilian designation.DH 4A I think
dehavilland a good plane
out of oh canada.
I came back from Vietnam with $5,000 dollars in the bank

well i trust good old
see more here's a sttream segment from democracy now, today
hilarious it's the exact same pattern as vietnamization
pull back the grunts with increased air power
it's really a protected withdrawal
what i did in vietnam
pulled out the troops
at the end i flew into 3 deserted bases summer of '71
this one is bu dop a jazzy name indiginous
whole lotta landmines buried in the concertina wires
click on it and you will be there
one time we carried a young clean cut blond louey up there
he was gonna take command of bu dop de wap
not too long after that we flew back there and
these two hippy dudes swear to gawd
they was cheech and chong in fatigues and beads and freak sunglasses
they was laughing and said they'd just got kicked out of the war
"where ya goin man? bien hoa? far out can we catch a ride?"

not long after that they was all gone.

we flew north to bu dop on the border
red dirt runway red dust on the ruins of bunkers
no one was there save for one small boy
he looked at us shading his eyes with his hand
his little belly stuck out from under his t shirt
we didn't stick around to say goodbye....
goodbye bu dop, the war is over, yeah, peace out,

Put "the awesome twenty-first century US airpower at the disposal of the Iraqis . . ."

The Bush administration is considering a plan to put America's awesome airpower at the disposal of Iraqi commanders, as a way of reducing the number of US troops on the ground. The plan is causing consternation among commanders in US air force, who say it could lead to increased civilian casualties and lead to airstrikes being used as means of settling old scores.

my first reaction i have to say is what the language of that statement conveys to me,,,,, still playing the power card even in retreat,,,,, which is a valid interpretation, but the perspective changes into the opposition's, in the larger contect of the story.

I believe it 100%
let's see if it does involve pulling out troops
and the shock and awe firepower that started off the invasion
will follow the retreat how neat!

the iraqis calling in airstrikes on one another
settling old scores
we would be aiding and abetting a civil war

i don't think the air force has concerns about hitting civilians from a moral standpoint
but it makes for bad press

NEW YORK TIMES today demands the US stop using white phosphorous
