If There Really Is a Dog

Post by Lightning Rod » March 9th, 2009, 5:19 pm

My friend and musical collaborator, barry gemillion and I have been kicking this can down the road for several weeks. We're building a musical.

Day before yesterday I wrote the lyric below. I sent it to barry. Yesterday he sent his treatment of it back. Take a listen. Scene is the protagonist in bed sleepless with his dog. (the dog's name is godot)

I'm an agnostic
dyslexic
insomniac

I stay awake at night
wondering
wondering
if there really is a dog

I wouldn't hog your intellect
I wouldn't ask you questions
I wouldn't tell you what to do
or give you my suggestions

cuz I'ma
an agnostic
dyslexic
insomniac

I stay awake at night
wondering
wondering
if there really is a dog

It's on my blog, just read it
I know you really don't need it
I try not to think of you not thinking of me
the dawn doesn't need for me to greet it

I stay awake at night
I stay awake all night
wondering
wondering
if there really is a dog

Godot's Song

what would you do
if you were a dog?
what would you do
if your name was god?

what would you do?
what would you do?
what would you do?
create a universe?

you see every thing that happens
thank god that dogs can't talk
the eye is unnoticed, the eye is omniscient
it's the eye, the eye
the eye of the dog

what would you do
if your name was god?
and you were a dog who
saw everything
everything?

you saw all the spats
and saw all the dances
dirty little secrets
the retreats, the advances

What would you do if
you were a dog named god?

and saw everything
everything
everything
everything

when you're a dog named god
you say not a word
you only observe
when you're a dog named god

thank god that dogs can't talk
thank god that dogs can't sing
they see
everything
everything
everything

I see everything
but I don''t talk about it
talk about it
I see everything
but I don't say a word
not a word, not a word
about anything, anything
I'm a dog named god
"These words don't make me a poet, these Eyes make me a poet."

here is the next song in the cycle

the Bride wants to be married in the traditional manner, in a church

the Groom wants it to be a more casual affair, on a far-away beach

------
Bride's Song

As dog is my witness
I say to you
As dog is my witness
I vow

A wedding has nothing to do with The Groom
a wedding is only about The Bride

Showers and receptions, immaculate conceptions
but it's all about The Bride

You can't hide the ceremony
the vows of matrimony
on some desolate beach
with preacher and witnesses
it's a pitiful scene, even if the dog is there

I want it in a Church
yes, I want it in a Church
because, it's all about The Bride
It's All About The Bride!

As dog is my witness
I say to you
As dog is my witness
I vow

It's all about The Bride
It's all about The Bride
maybe i'm too traditional
but I Want It In A Church
It's ALL ABOUT THE BRIDE!

If I was god I would spend a lot more time fishing.

All three of them gems clay, the audio I listened to half a dozen times, better than "Cadillac s , guitars and hillbilly music" for me tonight. thanks for the tune.

I like Zorba the Greeks line about marriage, a house, kids. he called it "the full catastrophe"

O well the old folk's say you never can tell.

Somebody got to stand on top of that cake now that Thomas E. Dewey is departed.

I would, but I would be scared sh*tless of any woman crazy enough to want to marry me. She would have to be psychotic.

Dude, I gotta get me one of those...a friend like Barry that I can jot shit down and send it off to and he turns it into a song. I been jotting shit down since I was 17 or so.

I like his treatment of your lyric. Interesting take.

Peace,
Barry

It only took me thirty years to teach him how to do that
