criticism's purpose to reveal, draw attention too or make known
a methodology for bringing change through a heighten awareness
for some, pure entertainment to occupy time or just a thing to do
deciding its effectiveness depends on how often and the situation
criticizing for criticism’s sake can be monotonous and superficial
especially, if a viable suggestion is not offered to bring revision

criticism with substance
does have value for growth
while self-criticism harder
near impossible to accept
blinded by personal bias
clouding self-evaluation
yet needed as a balance
tempering other criticism
allowing proper reflection
lending to conformity or not

I'm always looking for honest reactions to my stuff so I'll take anything I can get (even if, like everyone else, I occasionally take offense). I guess I just don't get this. Criticism in the most general sense can either be negative or positive; so at least on one reading, one can see this as a call not to read at all.

No, I don't think that's what you mean.

I don't mind poetry critiques at all. Hey, you put your stuff out there, you should expect it to be critiqued from time to time, even if not posted on a specifically designated forum for critique. All art gets critiqued. Plus, it's quite possible the critiques you get may help improve the work.

What I don't like is personal criticism. Criticize my life or who I am and I don't take too kindly to it. I try to ignore that type of thing but it really gets to me.

because for the most part
you're all arguing for a grading process
so who gets to be the professor?

and criticisms are a kind of grade
though you have to include
politicization, sexism, personality conflicts

so who can be the un-biased critique?

no one

so my opinion is that the irony of criticism
is more an art than than actual criticism

people express themselves better when they are free

and ironically you're all free to say what you bloody well
want to say

What I don't like is personal criticism. Criticize my life or who I am and I don't take too kindly to it. I try to ignore that type of thing but it really gets to me.

But what do you do with Sweetwater's e-mail contribution? My solution is just to say what pops into my head and then apologize if I've offended. It doesn't always work (At CP, I angered someone and then angered that person more by trying to keep talking -- something about me wanting the last word). When it doesn't, I shrug my shoulders and hide behind my own irrelevance in the larger scheme of things.

sweetwater.... Here's how I do it when I get a critique I didn't ask for...

If I'm not interested in hearing a critique, I just ignore it. *shrug*

If I am interested, then I take whatever I think is valuable from the critique and forget about the rest of it.

Sounds like you're never interested in critique and that's fine, but ya gotta realize that all art WILL get critiqued whether you want the critique or not. People who put their art in public need to accept that fact.

So, my suggestion to you is just to ignore the critiques and keep being open with your writing and write whatever you want however you want. What's the big deal?
