The Poet's Eye
                  commentary by Lightning Rod

The Poets' Eye is skeptical without being cynical, innocent without being naive and critical without being judgemental.

January

(posted 01-01-04)

my namesake god is Janus and this is his first day
he is the god of beginnings and ends, he looks forward and back
he is the sleek god of transition.
the god of the gate that opens both ways
I think that we should have January in September.
Oh, I know that in terms of planetary motion
that since the days start getting longer etc
but culturally think about it
School starts in Sept, and the new TV season
the new car models come out then. So we should
have January in September.
Only the Emperor George Bush can move a month like that
and he probably wouldn't do it unless it helped to steal the election
ceremonial as Rome's.
Besides it's not wise to invite a tyrant to gerrymander your calendar.
So, we think about beginnings.
my epistemology is pissed
the gate is banging in the wind
when the Empire is at peace the gate is closed
on the temple of Janus
when the Empire is at war it is open.
Empires must always be at war. War is the main
export of empire's. It's their business.
Janus looks forward, forward and back

From time to time I publish these little pieces of poetic commentary under the title Poet's Eye. I hope you all enjoy them and that they give you something worth thinking about. I always appreciate the wonderful discussions that ensue.
In the coming year I hope to continue the series. As long as my eyes hold out.
Please feel free to comment, pro or con or off the wall.
Happy New Year to all my litkicks friends

These EYES make me a poet."
