Hot Tits

(posted 02-12-04)

I have hesitated to comment on Janet Jackson’s tittie. But with all the undue hoopla about the subject, I suppose I must. This perfectly correographed ‘accident’ created a sensation and every sensation has its attendant backlash.

We see Senators suitably outraged that television was conspiring with crass porno show biz types to corrupt the morals of one of our most revered National Institutions—the Super Bowl. It’s a damned near religious holiday, the Super Bowl.

Every year we run this intramural gladitorial spectacle with pomp and glory and violent erotic ballet, the perfect church for capitalism. The Super Bowl is a religious festival complete with a eucharist of chips and dips. And it’s also a Nationial tribute to commercialism. That’s why the commercials are as big an attraction as the brand-name teams and the logo-laden swag and the popstar titties at halftime.
And that brings us to the matter of cheerleaders. It strikes me as mildly hypocrital to be making this fuss over four seconds of tittie at an event that features long legged girls in a chorus line doing provocative dance moves. Don’t get me wrong. I love cheerleaders. And there is not a stripper in Big D that hasn’t tried out for the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.

What we are seeing with this overamped display of mock outrage over the cameras catching a glimpse of Janet’s silicon masterpiece is another manifestation of the general mood of repression and restriction that hangs like a pall over our land. Kitch-nouveu-Puritanism. Oh, here’s a good excuse to give the media a little yank on the choke collar.
