George Bush doesn't hate black people

Wait, did I just say 'doesn't?' The Republican National Committee has a special offer for African-American soldiers: Go to Baghdad, lose your vote. http://www.gregpalast.com/massacre-of-the-buffalo-soldiers Here’s how the scheme worked: The RNC mailed these voters letters in envelopes marked, “Do no...

I remember reading some of Advertisements for Myself in my college existentialism class, but that's all I remember. I've never read any of his fiction, and I got maybe 50 pps into The Spooky Art before putting it aside. I want to like him, but I'm not sure if I do.

I read an excerpt of this in Granta, I think, that I liked. And then in a recent Harpers, some guy did a review of this book/appreciation of McCarthy's oeuvre(sp?) that made me want to read all his books. I'm sure I can find the Border Trilogy used, but I'll have to wait for the new one to be out in...

Yeah, fighting for freedoms they don't enjoy themselves. And if you're gonna start banning websites, be consistent. Don't call Air America political but Rush Limbaugh entertainment. There was a little to-do prior to the election because Armed Forces Radio broadcasta and hour of Limbaugh a day, even ...

Because the "columnists" have their posts filed in another separate area, you don't look there.. I tend to forget about the other boards as well. It's like back in the litkicks days, when lightninrod was reprimanded for (among other things) posting poetry and other non-utterances on utterances, and...

The thing that bugs me most about James Frey (and JT Leroy, for that matter) is that they only got published because the stuff was supposedly true. In Frey case, he claimed it was a memoir, in Leroy's case, it was 'autobiographical' fiction. In the Smoking Gun report on Frey, it was even claimed tha...

we never are the same as we were yesterday, but this is only a slice in time...not being apologetic...merely observing how long history is Knip, I remember back on Litkicks you wrote a nice piece on sailing through I believe the Persian Gulf and looking from your ship at the countries you were pass...

I haven't read The World is Flat , but I have read his first book, From Beiruit to Jerusalem about his time as a reporter in the Middle East, published in 1989, and a great introduction to the problems there. While I haven't read the recent book, I have read his columns in the meantime, many of whic...

The blogger Largehearted Boy had a 50 Books challenge; i.e. read 50 books in a year. I didn't technically take of the challenge, but it did get me to write down and keep track of the books I read over the course of the year, and it turned out to be something like a journal. I just wish I'd done more...

I've read Desert Solitaire, his novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, and it's unfortunate sequel, Hayduke Lives!, and Serpents of Paradise, a collection of his work. The only one I really didn't like was Hayduke Lives!, which suffered every problem a sequel could have. His Writer's Credo from Serpents of P...

Howl for Brett Favre

It's probably even better if you are a Packers fan, but still, this guy's demented genius. I saw the best quarterback of my generation destroyed by badness, starving hysterical on a naked bootleg, dragging himself through the Ashwaubenon streets at dawn looking for an open receiver, greybearded crac...

Cats love those laser pointers. Mine did the same thing when she was little. She even recognized the sound of me picking the pointer up off the table, could distinguish between that and the sound of a pen or pencil.

I know this isn't exactly literary, and some people might even think it trivial, but I really believe this is an issue that impacts all true American's, and won't somebody please think of the children?
