Re: The Old Vet (Saipan)

True story. I met this guy in a bar in a little town in the desert. It was near a military base. He actually invited me to his house, and maybe I should've gone. This was about 20 years ago. I'm pretty sure I wrote about it back then.

Re: The Meaning of Life

Pure art over politics might be THE ANSWER. But don't quote me! I might need to read more of Victor Frankl's philosophy. Beyond pessimism and optimism ...

The Old Vet (Saipan)

I still remember that guy, the random guy in that bar. He said he was 82 but looked 50, five foot five or six, a quiet man. He told me of the war he fought. He fought against Japan in 1944 on the usually idyllic isle of Saipan and his troop was nearly overrun. He told me of the irrational speed and ...

"Sundown you better take care if I find you've been creepin' round my back stair..." Made me think of this song by Gordon Lightfoot that they always used to play on AM radio

Re: Andromeda Has a Trillion Stars (I'm Small)

Apparently, there are multiple space probes zinging out there. I keep reading articles about how this probe launched in the '70s did this and that probe did that, and I just saw another headline. A probe has been hurtling for over 50 years at much faster than a speeding bullet, yet nowhere close to ...

Re: The Meaning of Life

I've always been uncomfortable with '42' btw. But for me it had more to do with what I was taught in church at a young age. They had a whole mythology of numerology, and 42 was bad, but just add 2 and 44 was solid. Subtract 2 and forty was some sort of transformative thing, both good and bad. Yeah, ...

Yes it does. Ten to the tenth power is inconceivable.

Re: The Meaning of Life

I read this in one of Joe Campbell's books,
and I considered him an intellectual giant
beyond any possible sort of reproach.
For awhile at least.

Re: mistakes

I dunno, maybe I'm wrong. I told her that I won't interact with her daughter (my niece) if she insists on some sort of fight each time. And then of course I was accused of "hating" her.

Re: mistakes

So true. I just had a long, drawn-out fight (fight? uh, let's not call it that, more like um, intense discussion) with my sister on this very concept.

The Meaning of Life

There is no meaning
until you give it meaning.
Or so I read in a book
one time.

Re: Chapbook

Parts of this sound like it was some sort of "phishing" scam. But ... probably not, I suppose. I've become super paranoid in recent years about electronic money transfers--but I guess that's just a phobia of mine.

Andromeda Has a Trillion Stars (I'm Small)

Andromeda is beyond the Milky Way.
Farthest thing we can see with our eyes.
A couple million light years away.
A galaxy with a trillion stars.
Just a faint smudge in the sky.
