Re: "Reflections from "Bizarro World"

That's all any of us can do, really. It's just baffling at this point.

Re: Waterfront

Yes, that's been one of the main problems-- fossil fuels. And just a general attitude in general of total "dominion" and domination and maximum extraction. We've been all over that territory, and it's getting old.

Re: the Election. Gotta get this off my chest.

I'm still trying to piece it together-- the hacked votes and stolen election. Piece together the trend of the last 50-60ish years, the last 16 in particular (this is not the first stolen presidential election-- see the "hanging chads" in FLA 16 years ago). Part of me suspects that there really is/ar...

Re: the Election. Gotta get this off my chest.

Of course! He stole the election. That makes more sense. That's both somewhat reassuring and almost completely horrifying.

Re: Beatnik came from sputnik

....." I guess he thought those bongo beating, turtle necked, jazz and poetry loving weirdos were like commie space heads " Ha. Never thought of it that way, but come to think of it, I guess you're right. And it didn't stop there. "Nik" was appended to other words after that-- usually with some sort...

Re: It's difficult for me to listen to Kerouac now

Good observations. In my big "roadgoing" journey 10-12 years ago, bright light, dust and windblown desert silence were the main things to ride with me, mostly Nevada and California. The soundtrack, when there was one, was heavy on dubbed-out roots reggae echo and pulse-- in my mind's eye I imagined ...

Topic: This business of a backlash against people upset by Trump's election-- called "whiners", "sore losers", "pussies" or worse, and the people who throw these labels around and claim that " life will go on as usual, so buck up, people " and so on, so forth, yada yada et cetera. Here's the thing: ...

Re: It's difficult for me to listen to Kerouac now

Nope, doesn't exist. No dollar meals. No $25-a-month cold-water flats in "Frisco." It's absolutely astounding how cheap it was to cross the continent back then. Long gone. Long gone. But the poetry, the jazz, the blues of course... Another story. And the idea of the road, the search...

Me too! Thanks Arcadia. Yes, R, someone had to break through the gray walls...

I guess I was in a shitty mood last week. It happens. I guess it's dangerous to spend too much time over at, ahem, that other place.

Re: If I walked a mile in Kerouac's shoes

"... the jazz man, got into him. And a little Gary Snyder zen. "... Yes. And pretty much in that order, after taking up with Neal. (from On the Road onto The Dharma Bums , and the rest of the journey). The jazz scenes in OTR are pretty incredible, almost to the point that you wish you didn't have to...

Thanks Terry.

This was written out in the remains of the old "Tunnel" site, several miles off Seven Troughs Road in western Nevada-- or at least that's where the notes and images came from.

Re: If I walked a mile in Kerouac's shoes

JK was a literary giant, and a flawed human being, full of contradictions. He came to reject the '60s hippies-- which his outpouring of writing a decade+ earlier had perhaps played the major role in inspiring-- because he saw them as taking the idea of a counterculture rebellion too far, to the poin...

Re: If I walked a mile in Kerouac's shoes

Don't know much about Lamantia. LeRoi Jones, Ted Joans and others definitely connected with the "Beat" movement into the sixties-- the black perspective/experience. Joans fused the blues and jazz into his poetry, and some of it had an ironic sort of "edge" to it (his father was killed in racial unre...

And who the hell are you? Save your judgmental moralizing for church.

So, we still buds, or what?

rR, it was incredible how he brought jazz to the page. Not just to write about it-- his prose sounded and felt like jazz.
