No laughing matter

The monthly "Anti Gravity" column in Scientific American offers a light-hearted look at some of the more arcane whimsy from the world of science. (Such as a recent article detailing breaking news from the forefront of flatulence research.) However I was surprised by the somber tone of this month's c...

Re: Who Agreed to a Five Day Work Week?

The knee-jerk response the Right gives whenever someone uses the S-word would be comical if it weren't so goddamned infuriating. They wield it like a weapon - the absolute worst thing you can say about someone is to accuse them of being a dreaded Socialist. It's like having the pox, or an STD. You h...

Re: Zuihitsu

I think the most frightening image in Alfred Hitchcock's movie "The Birds" is the one of the teacher dead on the schoolhouse steps, her body savaged, her eyes pecked out. That image just keeps going down and down and down into the subconscious, finding new depths. I saw that movie at the local Bijo...

Re: Zuihitsu

We try to make sense of this Place we find ourselves in by working out its bits and pieces. We break down the big problems into smaller ones we hope will be more tractable. Thus we have inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, surface chemistry, biochemistry, polymer chemistry... astrophysics, partic...

Re: irreconcilable differences part deux

( not intended to upstage your piece, but to jam on the theme ...) way back in the last century I was on a team of computer programmers who'd gather 'round the watering hole every Friday night: Willy, Carl, three Steves, two Mikes, a Tom and a Greg others I can't recall... and we all brought along o...

Re: irreconcilable differences

Betrayal hurts - this must have been awful. I've never been cuckolded (that I'm aware of, anyway), but I've overheard things said about me I was not meant to hear. The remarks themselves didn't sting as much as who they were coming from. And there were things said directly to me during the counselin...

Re: Zuihitsu

can't believe it's the middle of June with the June daisies coming on and we are still getting soaked on a regular basis - After a miserable 4 or 5 weeks, last week was actually quite nice around here - but it looks like several more days of North Sea weather on the way. Mid-June and I'm still wear...

Re: Restaurant Scene---a narrative poem

I get a "stranger in a strange land" vibe from this - maybe because it hits a little close to home - those idle fantasies about attractive strangers, ulitimately done in by the gulf (or perception of one) between us
