Re: Looking for the God Particle

The notion of an association with "God" was not proposed by science, but by the laymen attempting to report it in an accessible manner. It was just a colorful metaphor some reporter dreamed up. The Higgs is an attempt to find a reason, some underlying structure to explain, why the individual particl...

Re: Looking for the God Particle

I seem to recall reading that the term "God particle" was coined by a NYT journalist covering the search for the Higgs. The physicists at the LHC were more inclined to refer to the elusive entity as "that goddamned particle"...

Zuihitsu #LXI

( Until El Mingo's return it doesn't seem right to hijack his Zuihitsu thread - so I'll post here instead .) September - Multiple Personality Disorder. Heavy fleece and gloves on our morning walk - shorts and a tee by noon. The dog pulls me along up the hill as we charge ahead towards the 1-mile m...

Re: Brain Storm

Yeah, Doreen, the worst aftermath of this is I'm looking over my shoulder all the time, cowering from every stray ache and pain that comes down the line. I'm taking Norvasc (amiodipine) for my BP. I remember the last time I was on BP meds I'd get lightheaded if I ceased abruptly during exercise, and...

Which hat shall I wear today?
The photographer?
The mathematician?
The diarist?
The layabout?
The hiker?
If I don't know, how can you?

Re: perpetual jam!!!!!!!!!

and so the jam continues... life (I once told my daughter) isn't too unlike a raft trip down a river you can paddle and pole steer clear of rocks make camp on shore but in the end the river takes you where it wants I've just shot the rapids had a minor stroke and now the water runs smooth again some...

Re: Brain Storm

Sasha, first it sounds to this layman like you made an amazing recovery. Peripheral vision loss but mobility regained... Even the peripheral vision has returned. The last vestige of the event is a random scattering of tiny blind spots scattered across my visual field. It's a little like when you Ph...

Re: Brain Storm

Wow! I'm so sorry you experienced that, but I'm very happy to know the symptoms eased up and you now have the meds you need, and the follow-up appointments! Sounds scary. Hopefully, it will be the one and only time you'll experience anything like it! I was actually pretty damned lucky. As frighteni...

Re: Wrestling in the Metropolitan

Apocalypse with a sad, elegaic voice. There's a clever, earthy playfulness in the repartee. And some interesting visual details: "petroleum-fed insects"... "saffron skylight"... vines climbing "from the bones of the city"... Compelling stuff, indeed. One minor glitch: "Kevorkian released from prison...
