Re: 911 to the rescue

I don't remember ever explicitly hearing the 2nd half, though it was sometimes humorously implied. I seem to recall it more in the sense of "Boy, I'm glad I'm not in your shoes!!"

nope, looks like you got it this time - brought me to Flickr, to a picture of your namesake in what I presume is your backyard, & a few others.

It might just be me & my paleocomputer, but I cannot open the image. It doesn't even show up as a link when I hover the cursor over it... anyone else having the same problem?

Re: Forest succession

It's interesting how each stage seems to have its own players. Starting from bare dirt, the grasses seem to come first, & low weedy plants - then the brambles arrive, to get crowded out by even woodier stemmed stuff, & eventually trees. (Hereabouts, white pines & birches seem to the 1st to arrive, b...

Re: 911 to the rescue

yeah, it is dark - for me the appeal is from a linguistic POV. Just this morning, for some unknown reason, I flashed on a saying we used to bandy about in high school: "Your ass is grass!", meaning "Oh, you're in trouble now!". Why grass? I can understand "your ass" - a much abused body part often k...

Re: Wolf Trees

I just got in from a follow-up tramp! At one of the spots I stopped to soak in the ambience I was surrounded by chickadees, almost certainly checking me out. Like you, I caught only an occasional glimpse - just a flash of motion now & then from one hiding spot to another. But they were talking up a ...

Re: Wolf Trees

Beautiful! I've seen glimpses of them, but I'm more apt to hear than to see them. Their characteristic call is a kind of twanging, loose-banjo-string note: "chip-BOINNGG".
