True, that. But 2 and 3/4 years into this thing, doesn't the evidence point toward a substantial (and growing) resistance that is directly linked to the ongoing U.S. occupation? (Yes, I still call it an occupation ). Suppose that a substantial percentage of the insurgency is now "home-grown" resista...

Good question, Dave.... not sure I have the answer, other than it might be a matter of degree. And context. I look at what the two flags represented, and it seems to me that the Nazi Party was a much more focused murderous movement than was the Southern United States as a whole, given their respecti...

I've heard rumblings about so-called "bio-fuels" lately, as a possible alternative fuel, particularly in the last year. I read an interesting article about it last winter.... I'll see if I can find it, or track down similar information. If I remember right, Brazil is now substantially converted to b...

It's what the symbol stood for, rather than the symbol itself. I guess it depends on context. For example, I can watch a brain-dead and hilarious episode of "Dukes of Hazzard" and not take any serious offense at the General Lee's painted Confederate flag.... I suppose it's when people wave that flag...

Yes. I admit it. I find the Confederate flag offensive. It's true that the Civil War started as a Union military action to prevent the South's secession, and that the Emancipation Proclamation only freed the slaves in Southern states, but this declaration energized the abolitionist movement and it h...

Excellent post, Zlatko. The general is on-target with his assessment of the Iraq blunder. I don't know if the US-led invasion was initially popular with the Iraqis.... they were not "polled" before the invasion. It is possible, I suppose, that Saddam's ouster was initially popular with a decent majo...

Thanks doreen & jimbo... Yeah, jimbo, I drove that road, from Elko to Mountain Home, Idaho.... Highway 51, if I remember correctly. That canyon is a lovely one indeed.... I should have taken more pictures... "There's nothing out there", people say. Even the locals say that about Nevada.... but the h...
