I loved Maus. Painful and personal and honest always makes for a good mix.

Mr. B. Gone - Clive Barker

Anybody read this yet? Clive Barker's first horror novel since god knows when. All about a medieval demon fished up from hell by men, narrated by that demon. Nice, nasty, darkly humorous (there's a line in there, about one time when Mr. B. had kidnapped dozens of infants, that the locals had tracked...

I love the song, but I wasn't aware that it was based directly on Masoch's work.

"Whiplash girl-child in the dark"
"taste the whip in love not given lightly" -- you gotta love that

My two scents re: poetic vs. ugly words. Let's take the word "nightingale." Now there's a poetic word. It crops up in poetry all the time, especially in the Romantic period. But--guess what--nearly none of the poets who write about nightingales have ever *seen* one, let alone heard one sing. I've ne...

Arcadia, Hey, these hands may be beautiful, but remember that they can kill an ox at a hundred-yard range through one deadly cthonic chord of doom! :) Ragnarok 'n roll an' all that jazz I've got some new music on the Dream & Shadow Huntsman Group's mySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/dashg However,...

what? it's been a year?

Jaheseus H. Christ, where the hell does the time go. Hello, everyone! What did I miss? Still in Oklahoma here, still playing the music (I kick ASS on the piano now, playing contrapuntal parts and the whole bit). Had a steady income for about two years now, which is something that a guy could get use...

Don't Fear the Lions (a Dream & Shadow Huntsman Group pi

Hey, say Nay, and roll the fire Smoke and glass and steel for hire Drink from the well and run like hell Keep your teeth clenched on the wire The Wild Moon is smiling down, she says, I love you son We're wading through the forest as we're loading up our guns Steal a ship, sail from here, over the ra...

I've also always found that odd, Shamatha. This whole 4-20 business is rather silly to me.

April 20 is also Cthulhu Rising Day.

just got back from a hippie festival

A friend of mine organized a three-day long hippie festival in honor of April 20th called "The Last Daze of April." I'm not a hippie, but as it was organized by a friend I came along. That and he wanted me to perform on stage. Everyone camped out in a field for three days. During the day, everyone s...

I don't think she's deaf... she can hear the rustling of the catfood bag from clear across the house :) She's not all that white either; she's got colouring like a Siamese (although her hair is long. Neither of her parents were Siamese, and the rest of the litter were black. How's that for odd?). We...

She's definitely an oddity. She gets into these weird moods where she spends hours running around and jumping at phantoms. I mean, all cats have their little wild moods, but my Blue Eyes White Dragon (as I call her) does this especially often. She's also the only cat that I've ever seen who tries to...

sports may be *bent* for such evil uses by evil people, but in themselves they are innocent. This ain't sports, it's people.

I don't think this is so much a symptom of sports as it is a symptom of contemporary human behavior, upbringing, and development, with a bit of mob mentality thrown in.

I support sports. Competition is healthy and an excellent motivation for learning and training.

My cat is afraid of mice

That's right. She flees in terror before them. We bought her a toy mouse in an attempt to help her overcome this fear, but she's afraid of it too. Oddly enough, she's not afraid of the leather sculpture of a 1/2 scale panther, of which all the other cats we've had have been terrified. (Well, one of ...

I've been posting lately on a Cthulhu-mythos related message board. The folks there have got wind of this movie and have almost unilaterally begun lambasting it -- Lovecraft fans can be very cruel and unforgiving -- mostly because of a queer subtext introduced into the story that isn't present in th...
