So I've been going to the gym, (YMCA), trying to get rid of my middle aged gut...

Good for you! Keep it up! ....

I was swimming quite often but still couldn't get rid of mine..... Then I got sick and then I got depressed and stopped eating almost entirely and lost 15 pounds or something like that... maybe more.

I highly recommend the gym and eating fresh fruits, grains, and vegetables and only small portions of food (very little meat) throughout the day rather than 3 large meals. Protein is good... before and after workouts. Eat nuts! :D

Don't lose weight like I did. Very unhealthy to stop eating.

Wishing you health and strength! The gym makes me HIGH... I LOVE it!

tons of fruit and vegetables - huge salads - only a touch of olive oil - tehina in small amounts
chick peas, red beans - all legumes are great sources of protein

exercise is wonderful for increasing overall energy

(avoid white sugar, flour, processed foods)

btw Kurt... we all seem to get that mid-age ponch with age. mine got a bit too heavy over the holidays and cold weather when i did very little walking. walking is a damn good way to aid the body in weight control (if you use discipline with eating habits!)
