the terrorists have won (?)

Post by Doreen Peri » September 16th, 2004, 5:28 pm

Ok, so we have our little bulletin board terrorist who is logging in on this board from many locations using many different names and posting garbage. Do I just let the garbage stay and ignore it? Well, there's the freedom of speech ideal but even with the ideal, you just can't run into a crowded room and yell "fire!" and it's not ok to come into my house as a guest and call all of my other guests names and throw the carefully prepared buffet all over my carpet while calling me a whore. If you do that, you are no longer welcome in my home, even if you think it's a halloween party... no matter what costume you where or disguise you assume.

So, we have had several attacks by the boogeyman cyber-ass terrorist who thinks he's having fun, but I'm not having fun.

What has happened in my life because of this? I'll tell you. I am behind in my work... the people who actually pay my mortgage are waiting on projects which I haven't gotten to yet. The artists pages for Studio Eight which I planned to launch this week are not finished. I haven't slept in two nights. My relationship is crumbling, apparently, because LR doesn't see the significance of how I'm spending my time. I'm participating in internet forums with other webmasters getting information about how to contact authorities to make this thing stop and exchanging emails with people about this ridiculous matter wasting all of our time. My daughter is needs my attention and I'm tired and frazzled and wondering whether this is worth it.

Different people have different ideas about what acceptable behavior is, but I think we can all agree that we don't want this website to turn into a free-for-all head banging orgy full of links to porn sites and rude elementary school name calling.

Valid email addresses are now necessary to sign up here. If the terrorist wants to spend the time to rack up various email addresses to continue this nonsense, that's his prerogative and I'll just keep sitting here zapping his bullshit. Now, if you think that I should not worry about it and let him post whatever he wants and attempt to destroy this board, that's not going to happen. But if it continues, I won't be able to handle it. I will have to close this board down. I don't find it funny that someone has done a great job at effectively messing up many aspects of my REAL life because of the time it takes to babysit this board and make him disappear.

So, that's all I have to say for now.

Carry on and thanks for listening.

Dear Doreen:

You're doing all the work and we're having all the fun.

The least I can do is express sympathy and thanks for what you're performing for us.

Teaching, I would sometimes encounter a "student" who wanted to take over the class. I couldn't even get started on anything before he ( or she) would disrupt what was going on, just for the hell of it.

There is really no way out of this unless one can "use force", which, in a public school, one can no longer do, though I did manage to follow up on some threats of physical violence I received over the years, and did get assistance from armed security a couple of times toward the end of my alleged "career."

I suppose Levi got frustrated with the same situation, at least at times, and transformed his boards into a moderator-free zone by simply removing the temptation-- locking up the gun cabinet so the four-year-old couldn't get the AK-47 out and take it to the school grounds.

At this great distance and not knowing the strains you are under in your work life, but imagining them, it's clear that you are over-extended. The same thing happens to my wife when the crapola, generated by management, piles up. She's uncommonly good at dealing with her students, and since she teaches Math, at least has the right answer and solution method to rely on.

In the Humanities you just have to keep on debating the little boogers, now that the Western canon has been trashed by those who need it most and everyone is proclaiming that "The Color Purple" is a good as "King Lear."

All I'm doing here is nattering, I know. It doesn't matter that the "people" who cyber-surround you: LR, Knip,WIREMAN, Judih,Hester.mnaz, artguy, abcryscats-- are all swell folks.

One little pustule like the one who's been breaking windows can spoil it all.

If this forum folds, I will miss it, because it promises to be such fun. But I will understand. The sting of trying to manage a free, creative space and being Mao-Mao'ed by one little dork is familiar.

We love you.

Should I say more?

Let me pour you another glass of merlot?

Your friend,

Zlatko

As you know, I have no problem moderating your board, seen or unseen. I do not mind if I'm seen. As I have lots of times on my hands right now, it might be just the thing to keep the "pustule" off your boards.

Why waste time trying to create an ideal situation, with an invisible moderator, when you can do it now with visibility?

You have a job. Right now, I don't.
You have a child and a Lightning Rod. I have cats.
You have plenty of other things you'd like to be doing to improve this website and the "pustule" is wasting your time.

Let me try. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. At least you will have tried.

Cat.

Zlatko -

You are very sweet and kind. Yes, I'm overwhelmed at the moment and your stories about school and your wife are appreciated. It's similar. Yep. As far as it being similar to anything that happened at Levi's boards, I rather doubt it, as he has said several times that he and his staff never got very bothered by this troll person and they just laughed it off over and over. I'm not him. And I'm not them. And I'm not laughing. I don't handle things like others do, maybe. I should look at it like a computer virus to get rid of but I don't. I look at it like something I've worked hard on trying to be destroyed and it effects me personally. Maybe I'm just an overworked, weak, overly emotional person, but any time MY time gets stolen by someone else's agenda, it irritates me.

For example, I like to use an answering machine and get back to people when I have a chance. I use email the same way. Someone calls on the phone and asks me to get a paper and pen to write down information which they need me to attend to for their project, I answer by saying, "email it to me". I don't want to put down everything I'm doing just to address their needs at their convenience.

This is similar in that I feel my time has been stolen when I could have been doing other things. And it's been stressful because, yes, I have a heavy workload and other personal responsibilities.

But mostly, I'd really like to see a creative exchange of ideas on these boards and no blatant bombing of them. If I were passing by and hit this board for the first time and saw some of the crap I've deleted, I wouldn't come back here. I want people to feel comfortable here.

I truly appreciate your post and caring. It means a lot to me. Thank you so much. We'll see how it goes. And thanks for the glass of Merlot. That's some fine wine!

----

Cat- Yes, I know you want to help and I appreciate that. No, I don't want visible moderators. I just don't want it that way even though you're comfortable with it. If I were able to figure out how to make moderator status for a few select individuals without their names posted on each board as moderator, I'd do it. But I haven't figured it out yet. For now, we'll just go on as we have been and see how it goes. Thanks much for your support and for your articulate posts.

Both of you are valued here... thank you!

-------

Would you like to know something? Right this moment there is one "guest" with 22 windows open on these forums. Yep. Is that strange, or what? 22 windows. We don't have 22 forums! They have duplicate windows open all over their computer. How do I know this? Because the software sees it. Now, that is very odd and this happens from time to time. *sigh*... maybe he's ready to register again! *shudder* LOL!!!! :D

Oh, I know... I'll go get some duct tape and plastic.... the terror level has risen to red...... I could bomb him first before he bombs me... whaddya think? hahahahahahaha

Cyberspace.... geesh.....

Oh, but I got some good advice on reporting problems like this to ISPs ..... and my attorney is on the case right now as we speak....;)

Now, let's write some poetry... or something else that's fun, ok? And don't forget about tomorrow's Live Poetry Jam! Email me for details....

I came here after seeing this problem reported on the phpBB help boards. (my board has a different problem, a bug, which I'd like to get fixed, but that's another story.) I agree with the person who told you to treat the troll like a computer virus. This is your board. This is not a democracy. Eliminate the bot.

hi frollostone!

welcome! thanks for following this little melodrama and for coming here to say hello and offer your supportive words.

you're right, of course....

that's why i sought out help ... to figure out by myself how to eliminate the problem.

i couldn't believe how awesome everyone over there on the help boards was... it's just a fabulous group of support people who really care about community building and help each other with this open source software! All of the people over there are awesome!

unfortunately, i'm not a techie so some of the stuff is over my head... but i'm trying

i hope you get rid of your bug! I'll go to your site and say hi, too!

if you like the arts and discussion about issues, stop by again. We'll look forward to interacting with you. :)

doreen,

it's escalated to this height?
i wish you more than ample strength
to overcome this infectious plight.
no trollspew have i here met
having not spent nearly enough time here yet
i saw the southward dumpster bin
but felt no call to venture in
i wish your new blue home a quick solution
to carry on, unimpeded, your creative revolution.

My tech knowlege rocks in at zilch, but I have a handy pet techie on hand who helped me get rid of my bug. It turned out that the server the board was based on was so full that our messages were just bouncing out of it. Solution: move the board to a different server. It took a few days, but things seem to be working now. Huzzah, let the joy bells ring, etc.

I've been trying for ages to find a board that has someone on it who knows something about non-English-language music, so it was a relief to see people on here discussing the Tuvans. I'll stop by again, if only for that. I like the Lit. forum as well.
