The FLYING Dream !
I finally had it last night.
All my life I've heard other people tell me about the dreams they've had that they were flying. I've NEVER had one and I always felt like I was missing out.
Last night, all I can remember about the dream is that I lifted off from the ground four or five times and was flying about five hundred feet above the earth. I don't think I had wings or anything. It was just as if I was using an updraft in some special way to carry me into the sky. There was a story in the dream, I just don't remember it anymore. It was a great feeling. I was in control and yet I wasn't. Every time I wanted to come back down, I could, but while I was up there something else was also in control of me. I had to trust it.
Then, strangely enough, I woke two hours BEFORE the alarm clock went off and couldn't get back to sleep. I wasn't tense or anything. I just felt that I'd had enough rest and it was time to get up and do things.
When it got light I saw that it had been snowing a bit during the night.
Anyone else here have flying dreams?
What do they mean?
When do you have them?
Do they scare you or make you feel empowered?
I can hardly wait to go to bed to see if I will dream that way again tonight.

I've had a few flying dreams. And many other dreams involving other magical feats (like psychokinesis, passing through walls, the ability to cause the temperature in precisely defined areas to drop drastically thus creating ice, and lots of more abstract stuff; had a dream a couple nights ago in which I engaged in a magic fight. That was *really* abstract)
I don't buy into the idea of dreams "meaning" anything.
I believe that dreaming is another facet of reality. When dreaming we can travel to other "worlds." But most of the time we don't. We just build amusing little constructs and play around in them.

I have the flying dream every so often, I remember once when I was just walking along, in the dream, and I only just sort of jumped off a curb on the street, you know how you sort of sometimes just jump or leap off of them, and then a draft caught the back of shirt and I had this balloon like thing going on with my shirt and I go sailing up; man it feels so real, its like your stomach is falling out of your asshole or something, the same rollercoaster feeling; what about falling dreams? Do you have those?
I am looking for a home for my thoughts.
I used to have the flying dream..... Now I only dream that I'm a world-record long jumper, once in awhile. What does it mean?..... I've gained weight, perhaps?
I like those dreams. It's the dreams where I'm drifting through a specific setting that seems so familiar.... but the setting is only familiar in the dream, as if I'd been there-- but I really haven't. Those are the strange dreams.

Oh I've had flying dreams, many years ago, they are the most pleasureable dreams I've ever had. I wonder if they have something to do with one's mindset, because it's been forever since I've dreamt like that.
I soar just above the mountains and treetops and move swiftly and smoothly along, taking it all in. It's always a very peaceful flight and I never find myself fighting to stay afloat or suddenly plummeting to the earth. It's such a natural sensation it makes me wonder if there isn't so much more beyond the limitations of these bodies of ours.
I've also had dreams where I could bound into the air and stay aloft for ages before touching down again momentarily and then I'd leap into the air and be off again. Fabulous way to travel, let me tell you. Great fun.
Last year I dreamt I was walking along a city street and a gentle gust of wind lifted me off my feet and before I knew it I was floating a few feet off the ground and down the street...it was grand.
I've had very few dreams when I'm falling, but I once dreamt I was sucked out of a gaping hole in a jet midflight...don't know how that one ended but it was a doozy! One of the most frightening sensations is when I'm perched at the very tippy-top of a skyscraper and it's only wide enough for my feet and there's no place to go but down. I wake up sweating...it's a bitch!
As for that wierd sensation that Cat speaks of just before falling to sleep, I have something similar. It's almost like an out of body experience for me and it's damned terrifying...I usually startle myself back awake. Oh I hate when that happens, wonder what it is.

I love the way you describe it, Mousey! That is exactly how it felt when I had that dream.
I haven't had it since -- DARN.
And I don't know what causes the falling sensation either.
Not to change the subject or anything, but once as a little kid I looked directly down into the crack between the elevator and the floor we were getting off on, and I nearly had a panic attack. Just looking directly down all that distance scared me to death! Recently I discovered that one of my very near ancestors died falling down an elevator shaft. Makes you wonder.
WHAT are dreams? Are they memories? Purely imagination and the unconscious mind at work? Metaphors for something that tap into the cosmic consciousness (lol)? Predictions of the future? Do dreams have the ability to empower or intimidate us? That flying dream made me feel GREAT! I woke up way before the alarm and had a very productive day. If I hadn't had that dream, I doubt it would have been such a great day.
And here's a thought: NONE of us (unless there are some aerial stuntsman or hang gliders here) has ever actually FLOWN on our own power. So why do have such an accurate (??) idea of what it means to fly??
