Request for help! Need alcohol songs

Post by judih » January 22nd, 2007, 3:14 am

Yes, it's that time of year again. Health Week at our Jr. High and I've been asked if I'd consider giving a seminar on alcohol.
Last year's drug awareness seminar took me 3 weeks of prep. time - choosing songs to represent about 8 different drugs, compiling dictionaries of terms, photocopying lyrics with blanks for the kids to fill in as they listened, creating the hook to get them interested.

I enjoyed it and looked forward to re-using it till, whamo, change of angle - no menu of drugs, only alcohol.

So, I ask you. Which songs, in your opinion, are both attractive to a young teenager's ear and offer reasonable lyrics to help start off a discussion of alcohol and its effects.

I want to stress that alcohol in itself is not 'evil' and moderation is cool, but that overindulging while partying is not the answer to a growing adolescent's conception of self.

So, any song ideas!?
Number one consideration is the music - should be good and the lyrics - should be comprehensible.

Thanks. Truly.

Only one I can think of is
Wreck on The Highway
Hank Williams Sr. or Roy Acuff

When I heard the crash on the highway
I knew what it was from the start.
I went to the scene of destruction
And a picture was stamped on my heart.
There was whiskey and blood all together
Mixed with glass where they lay
Death played her hand in destruction
But I didn't hear nobody pray.

Whiskey, gin and brandy
With a glass I'm pretty handy
I'm trying to walk a straight line
On sour mash and cheap wine
So join me for a drink boys
We're gonna make a big noise
So don't worry about tomorrow
Take it today
Forget about the check
We'll get hell to pay
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
Yeah
Have a drink on me
Have a drink on me
On me
Come on
Dizzy, drunk and fightin'
On tequila white lightnin'
My glass is getting shorter
On whiskey, ice and water
So come on and have a good time
And get blinded out of your mind
So don't worry about tomorrow
Take it today
Forget about the check
We'll get hell to pay

ac/dc - have a drink on me

No need to download anything. It was just a page of lyrics. 311, I guess, is a hip hop band. Not familiar with the song but your students might be.
Artist: 311 Lyrics
Album: Don't Tread On Me Lyrics
Title: Whiskey And Wine Lyrics

I know what you're thinking
I know I did you wrong
But I just got this feeling
Baby please hold on
The way we used to dance
We forgot the steps
We both lost our balance
Now I drink to forget

Whiskey and wine
Killing me shot at a time

You pour the liquor in the cup and then you swirl it around
Cause, you don't remember if you're up or you're down (up or you're down)
A temporary fix
Or moment's elixir
Yeah and I will say
I put my hand up in the air and I won't do it again, naw (put my hand)
Can't promise it because I don't pretend to know (to know what)
What the price I pay
Yeah yeah
Not a remedy for a thing and I will do it again, naw

Whiskey and wine
Killing me shot at a time

Whiskey and wine
Killing me shot at a time

To tell ya the truth this is the first song that came to mind but I was  to say it. It is hardly appropriate. So I went with one with a moral, a song I would sing to myself everytime I came across a wreck on the highway.

Lets Get Drunk and Screw-Jimmy Buffet

I really do
Appriciate
The fact you're
Sitting here

Your voice sounds
So wonderful
But your face don't
Look to clear

So barmaid bring a pitcher
Another round of brew
Honey why don't we get drunk and screw

Why don't we get drunk and screw
I just bought
A waterbed
It's filled up for me and you

They said are a snub queen
Honey I don't think that's true
So why don't we get drunk and screw

Pick it Coral Reefer's, here we go

(Solo music break)

Why don't we get drunk and screw
I just bought a waterbed
It's filled up for me and you

They said are a snub queen
Honey I don't think that's true
So why don't we get drunk and screw

Yah now baby

Why dont we get drunk and screw

Alkaline Trio.

Crawl?

Waking up zeroed in on medicine
Am I waking up at all today
Seeing lights, feeling pain
There's my cure on ice
I can walk but I will crawl there
I will crawl there

Sitting straight, feeling faint
An exhausted smile screens my words
But I will hear them
Here's a phrase that we all know
But I can't make sense
I don't know words but I will hear them
I still hear them

Never ran away for the sake of scars
Tried not to move but she was armed
And shots were fired
Now a hole in the head of this wounded liar

Never had a drink that I didn't like
Got a taste of you, threw up all night
I got more sick
With every sour second rate kiss
Everything I never would miss again

I don't know who your boyfriend is

From their album From Here to Infirmary.

Dropkick Murphys' "Bar Room Hero" would be good too, but it may be too agressive. I would also suggest "Kiss Me I'm Shitfaced", but that may not be appropriate for a Jr. High.

You know what, now that I'm thinking about it, definitely Panic! at the Disco's Nails for Breakfast, Tacks for Snacks or Camisado. The song is about the guitarist's father's alcoholism, and I can assure that Jr. High students will know P!atd.

Heres Camisado :

and
Nails for Breakfast, Tacks for Snacks, well, here's lyrics:

Ohhhhhh
the whiskey was spilt
on the barroom floor
and the bar was closed for the night,
whennnnnnn
out of his hole
ran a little brown mouse
and he danced in the pale moonlight,
welllllllllllllllllll
he lapped up the liquor
on the barroom floor
and back on his haunches he sat,
annnndddddddd
all night long
you could hear him roar...
"Bring out the g--d--- cat!"

My fave drunk song.
H 8)
"I am a victim of society, and, an entertainer"........DW
