I've written about Mingus before. He is our cat. A stoned cold predator. White as ice.
He's the terror of the neighborhood. The crows know who he is and send up a warning when they spot him.
Today Mingus came through the back door holding a bunny in his jaws, a baby bunny. When Doreen screamed, I took the bunny, his prize.
The bunny seemed still alive. There was no blood. His little eyes were open and lovable.
But he was perfectly still, frozen. I think this is what saved him. Mingus likes things that move and try to escape. His victims are not so much prey as they are playthings.
So, I rescued the bunny and held him in my palms for 15 minutes. He started to show signs of life. I locked Mingus in the house and took the bunny outside and placed him on the lawn. At first he was frozen again. I stroked him and then ....after a few minutes I nudged him on the tail and he bounded across the lawn paroled, pardoned from predatory death. He was only a baby. I hope he learned a good lesson.
