as a child who gets in serious trouble calls out
"mommy! daddy! help me...help me!"
when our own world we've made a mess out of
we turn to "yahweh! god! allah! help us!"
we are unable to help ourselves
or so it seems when we see the world
unraveling all around us while we sit
and scratch our heads wondering
who do we turn to now that we're helpless...
we have always created our gods in times of need
when all else seems to fail us we turn our eyes skywards
hoping to see that which created it all including our mess.

speaking of children, which I know nothing about, I heard a Catholic monk describe how a new born baby will cling to anything when it is frightened. It is a healthy instinct in babies but not maybe for adults
speaking of Catholic Monks (he also practices Zen) I thought you might like to watch this video about mysticism and fundamentalism.
The Rabbi and The Monk a twenty eight minute video
the most interesting part for me is sixteen minutes and ten seconds into it where the host ask why is their such a huge explosion of fundamentalism.
The Monk and The Rabbi
notes from memory

whenever you get fearful you cling this is an instinct we are born with....
we get frightened we want to hang onto something... fundamentalism clings to religious doctrine out of fear...in fundamentalism there is a lot of fear mongering...which makes them much more politically malleable... fundamentalism is the same what ever religion... fundamentalism will take the scriptures literally
The stories in the Bible can't be about what they seem to be or else we could write better stories....a story is where the heart surprises the the head...
Mysticism is the nagging suspicion that the apparent brokenness, discord, and discontinuities of everyday life conceal a hidden unity. Just beneath the surface, everything is joined to everything else. To a mystic, what we call reality is really only the myriad refractions of that ultimate, underlying unity

I can't remember which thread we were posting on regarding Rick Perry who I wasn't familiar with. If this is the wrong thread, sorry. I'm watching some info about him on the Rachel Maddow show. OMG, this guy's really scary!
