Go ahead. Talk about it.

From the movie, I didn't get the impression that they were kids, know I didn't mean that, Jack. I only was saying that they were really young and he wasn't. Now you have me curious. Going to see what mr. google has to say. ;)

Dave? We are not your parents. AND we are not fighting. We're talking about the topic I posted. If you call us mom and dad again, you're going to have to go to your room without your dinner! :D

heh

Lightning Rod, I am NOT your mother! If you call me mom one more time, I'm going to stop talking to you once and for all. Get it?

:P

D i was going to delete my comment
not my place to reply to Dave
since he was replying to you and clay

I was curious to I googled jackson pollack and child molestation too, did not see anything that relates

I was kind of joking about the men stooping so low, all we seem to do is parade around trying to impress the females. just my take on male vanity.

Clay this the best conversation you and D have had in a long time

Can you walk a mile in her shoes?
Can you look at what is funny
to you and not to her
what would I know about women
you must know more than me

truckin... please don't delete your posts. It's fine to talk to anybody at all in the thread. This is an open conversation between whoever wants to talk about it.

Lrod and I talk almost every day on IM. ;)

And no, I believe the girls Pollack went with were of age. I couldn't find anything about their ages, either, but maybe I will eventually.

Yeah
so now we move on to Oedipus,
I been working on an updated version of the myth
Where he kills his mother and marries his father.

That's bizzare but it has been on my mind for months

cradle robbing is a matter of perspective, I guess
I don't know either Clay
I like this thread it touches on so many things I been thinking about.

Perezoso had a poem either titled "baby fucker" or the subject matter was "baby fucker"

Interesting book called Reading Lolita in Tehran.

I have never read Lolita, well I read about half of it but the paperback's binding disintergrated and the pages scattered. I have never gone back to read it again.

Thinking about sensation
just pure sensation
the other as meat
nothing more than that
the complete objectification of the female
but the tables are turning
women have always had their boy toys too.
even more so these days it seems

I am wandering
I wish we could get back to mythology and its pretentious uses.

Note to Oedipus
just buy her flowers on mother's day
okay

that had nothing to do with anything

chthonic
Just a dirty joke I guess
The solipsized woman
nothing to do with rock and roll

What's new
What's changed
I was stunned to hear a friend tell me about her sexual life at twelve
I could not imagine
I was hugging pillows at twelve
strange new world

I can't explain the emptiness the loneliness after making love to someone I did not care about
thinking nothing but let me get the hell out of this bed and away from her.
No affection, no presence,
Eventually I stopped

I am getting farther from the subject of this thread
read something the other day about Dionysis and Appollo, as if it was a competition as to who was more kick ass. Like it was a discussion about the Bears and the Packers.

are u sure I should not delete this crap?

I would think that would be more of a reflection on the poet more so than references to Greek mythology in general.

Ani DiFranco's Icarus
. . .
it's just like Icarus ascending
never intending to look back
nature's law and your tragic flaw
I find descending
flying into the arms of a Venus flytrap
. . .

I don't find that limp. The difference would be if the poet has something to say, or is just showing off their supposed knowledge. Which, I suppose, would lead back to the original question.
edit I should ask what you mean by contemporary.

Strangely I was thinking of something along the same lines recently. Not writing a new version or anything, just Freudian reversal, I guess.

To the original post:

Some people are assholes. It think the arts and humanities attract so many because they're more accessible than other fields. I once met this guy who was studying chemistry who just talked and talked about chemistry, apparently trying to impress everyone with his knowledge (though, of course, just irritating everyone instead).

At the same time, I wouldn't call an ego the same as snobbery or pretension. While an ego can be just as irritating, it can also be deserved (the same can not be said of snobbery or pretension). I'm thinking of someone like Picasso, whose ego is perhaps as famous as he is.

Freudian reversal

God is the pooh bear
and Freud is the Easter bunny

I used to talk a lot about chemistry
Now I talk too much about Freud.

I was reading about the Renaissance one time and I was astounded to discover that the wide-spread use of Greek myth in art & literature began then. This was because the Greek myths were all known by heart by all educated people; to them, it wasn't some ancient thing, it was RIGHT NOW and just as applicable as ever.

Now there's a lot of people who use Greek myth as an axiomatic reaction, because it's something that they've seen done in great art. "Because you're s'posed to," even if they don't consciously realize it. If you use Greek myth (or any other reference) for a specific purpose, then good. But if you didn't specifically choose that reference to make a specific point, well, all that shows is a lack of critical perspective. What is an artist without critical perspective? A sack of meat with a paintbrush.

Which is what pretentiousness is all about: Napoleon complex. Cover up your smallness by looking large in other areas.

So, as to all those pretentious snobby snotty types, fuck 'em. Ignore 'em and enjoy the chablis :)
