I've decided I'm not goin' 'cause I hear I might have to come back.

Reincarnation doesn't really appeal to me at the moment.

it's more about when are you going????......do you feel there's like some kinda predestined time.....the endless cycle of death and rebirth is a whole nother can of beans.....

Sorry, Mark. That was just a little depressive humor. ;)

About the timing thing... nah.... I never believed in predestination. That would make everything futile, in my opinion.

I mean, what's the point if it's all predestined? I figure if your time of death is part of predestination so is everything else and so why bother with anything? The theory says to me that no matter what you do, it won't matter anyway. You can't change anything. It implies that you have no control whatsoever over your own life. If that was the case, then how do decisions we make change our circumstances? Did God or the Universe or whatever or whoever is in power supposedly KNOW we'd make those exact decisions?

It's too bizarre of a concept to consider it to be even possibly true.

We are the makers of our own destinies. It's what we do and decide, how we live, that determines which direction we go. A person can exercise and eat right and take care of themselves and definitely prolong their lives.

That's not saying that a truck might not hit you when you cross the street. There are chance accidents. We could get killed by a tsunami or an earthquake. But you are less likely to get killed by a truck running you over if you look both ways before you cross the street and much less likely to get killed by an earthquake if you don't live in an area where earthquakes usually happen.

We DO have some control of our lives. A lot of control, in my opinion.

To think that our date of death is predestined is just too bogus to even consider.

:)

I actually believe in the exact opposite. I believe we can change EVERYthing if we want to. Including adding years to our lives by taking care of ourselves.

you exercise and only eat white meat
and abstain from all of your pleasures
and what do you get?

five more years of old age
and you can't even enjoy yourself

I don't believe that, Lightning Rod.

I'm swimming 50 laps a day and have almost totally stopped smoking and drinking. I feel great!

And even if it doesn't add 5 years to my life at the end of my life), it definitely adds quality of life right now. And I'm very much enjoying myself (except for the mental health issue.... I need to cut down on internet time for obvious reasons... too much internet isn't healthy).

Still, I don't believe in there IS a predestined date and time for us to die. And I DO believe that you can extend both the years and the quality of those years by taking care of ourselves.

Predestination isn't real. We DO have control over our lives.

I think I have seen it many times wireman. I am stopped at a stop sign and I look both ways and then pull out into the intersection and get creamed by a mack truck. Because I looked but I did not see. Makes me look again sometimes.

I think I have driven two million miles, a lot of near misses, my beginers luck is used up. But you can't live in fear of it. Even if a bullet has your number on it.
Do remember the story surfermike told about the guy in Vietnam who would not take his helmet off on a sweltering day?

i don't "believe" in much of anything. i find it liberating. however, i have for many years had a premonition that i kick the bucket at 54, so, I've got almost four years left -- then i'm outta here. it's okay. i mean, i might go kicking and screaming and who knows what comes next, maybe oblivion, but i can't worry about these things too much. live in the moment is my motto.

Uncertainty

I am sure I have some control over it. But they say we all going to die sooner or later. I guess the "your time to go" philosophy is a way to deal with the fear of death.

I am not a good one to talk about this Mark, I am still believing I am going to live forever. Really I am a fool like that deep down I can't except my own end. I am in a little corner of my brain trying to hide from it.

westie.
Living in the moment is a good philosphy for people like truck drivers or hgh rise construction workers. I guess mindfullness is a good philosophy for everybody.
But
I don't know if it is a premonition, just something I have witnessed so many times. Near death experiences a moment's inattention, distraction, and whammo.

I feel like I am drifting off topic wireman not intentionally. I am having trouble marshalling my words, lining them up thinking too much just going to let it go and hope it follows

Just a go from here on down

It is always a GO for me

Fear of death
I think that is what is at the root of it
A way to deal with that
They say a coward dies a thousand deaths
I am going to have a heck of a mortuary bill by the time I die
I have imagined my death a thousand times. I try to be prepared, but I know it will still catch me by suprise. I would prefer to see it coming. Where is Heisenberg with his Uncertainty principle when I need him?
Sometimes I wish I was Schrodinger's cat.

Some folks trust to reason
Others trust to might
I don't trust to nothing
But I know it come out right

That destiny quote from star wars I don't think Darth was talking about death. I mentioned the bit from surfermike because that guy's fear of geting shot in the head wound up getting him shot.

But even if he was

just going to hit the submit button and worry about editing or deleting this later.

Always assuming that I will still be here later.

All I am trying to say is please take care of your self. Like doreen said about feeling good. Maybe you will get hit by a bus even if you are taking care of yourself, but it can't hurt to take care.

If I had my druthers I would want a Ghandi death, as conscious as I could be.
But that has nothing to do with this either.

your genetic fate.

destiny... predestination... kismet... fortune... fate... no matter what we believe, no matter how we see death, no matter how we live life... we all die, one at a time. our only real concern is "did we do it right?" as we drift away from this physical body, no longer able to sustain the power of the spirit within... another ego-life done gone... call it what we may, the final breath concedes to death.

Legends of THe Fall
I loved that movie
The character played by Brad Pitt is fighting a grizzly with a Bowie knife at the end of the movie.
In the voice over during that scene his friend called One Stab says "he had a good death"
Every warrior hopes a good death will find him.
One Stab in Legends of The Fall.

I don't know why Brad Pitt's character reminded me of Clay.

I tend to think it's true.

Each of us some purpose in life I'm sure.

And oh the people we meet and the loves we feel and the strengths and the challenges and those damned defeats.

But to every thing there is a season
a time under the sun
and then
make way
make way for some other one

just make life a blast
if you can
if you're able

so regret don't gnaw you in the tomb.
