Does anybody know if books about grants are scams?

I'm thinking I need to start my own business and also may need to go to school to learn some skills to change careers.
I don't want to be spinning my wheels here. I have heard that there IS govt. grant money available for such purposes. I'm pretty sure that's a true fact. I just don't know where to start to find them.
Anybody have any advice?
