Why do you put your e-mail address in public view?

I'm interested in people with similar interests e-mailing me. I welcome such mail.

I didn't see the button to select "don't display my e-mail address" in my profile options.

Why do you put your e-mail address in pubic view?

Post by Doreen Peri » December 20th, 2004, 6:56 pm

Why do you put your e-mail address in pubic view, such as in your profile at this forum and other internet sites?

1- Is it because you are interested in people who have similar interests e-mailing you? Do you welcome such mail?

Or

2- Do you assume your publicly-displayed e-mail address will only be used by those who already know you?

Or

3- You couldn't find the button to select "don't display email address in my profile."

Or

4- You're looking for a date.

---------------

OK, the last one was clearly a joke, so I probably shouldn't include it in this poll.

I just want to know how many of you want and expect to get e-mails from people who have similar interests as you do.

And I want to also let you know that if you don't want e-mails from people you don't know yet, you should select the option in your profile not to display your e-mail address in public. And you should do this on every public forum you post on.

I, for one, love getting e-mail from people I've never met who have read my posts and have similar interests as I do.

I have made many friends this way.

None of the above. My answer is why not?

I wanted to choose #4, but I chose instead to preserve the integrity of the poll by answering with the honest answer, not the one that amused me the most. That honest answer being #1. But I wouldn't mind a date.

What the-? what happened to my picture?
Doreen, did you tint it because of the comment I made about the effects of jpg compression on my complexion? I really *am* as pale as I appeared in the picture initially, quite possibly moreso during the winter, and enjoy being so; my comment was directed at the illusion of blotches and just strange clumps of pixels due to the compression.
But you probably realise what I was talking about and just tinted the picture as a subtle joke

SBob - why not, indeed? Good question.

Mars - yeah, I saw your comment and I looked at the photo and thought you were right, that it looked pale and blue-toned or something, so I adjusted the colors a little in photoshop and reuploaded it for you and now on MY monitor, I think it looks much better, with more natural skin tone. Did I goof? If you think it looks tinted, then I don't know what to say, because it's not tinted, just color-adjusted a little.... phooey... I thought I was doing a good thing. I still have the other photo and can put it back up for you if you want. Let me know. (Please note that each and every monitor looks different. What I see is not exactly what you see or what anybody else sees. Damn internet.)

Thank you both for replying... I hope you both get all the emails you want. :D

I love getting unsolicited email
I can buy any drug in the pharmacy, help some nice person get their 32 million dollars out of Zambia, get to watch teenaged girls fucking baseball bats, refinance my house or just spend my days reading boring forwarded email jokes.

I have a nifty little device on my email inbox

it's called a 'delete button'

Lol, doreen, it's alright. I really don't care what the picture looks like as long as it vaguely resembles me. But yes, that unnatural skintone was my real one :)

It's a no brainer:

If ya want spam, ya got to put your address out there.

i didn't vote. i hate putting my email address into a public format. i get enough junk as it is now! I use 2 addresses. One goes into those spots where you can't order something off the internet or get the info you want without giving out your email addy... well, if i must give you one i will. That address gets hit with about 300 spam mails a day sent directly into my junk mail (and i never review them... too many, i just hit the empty button), and less than that making it to my "inbox".

My other email address gets very few hits each day. I think the more an address is used the more it gets used, solicited or not. Somehow strange people out there get it and figure, "why the heck not", and send you all kinds of stuff you have absolutely no interest in whatsoever.

Spam filters and the delete button work very well. If you don't want your email address public:

1. never use email
2. change addresses when the first piece of junk mail arrives

I don't like my email being piled up with spam or anything I'm not interested in, even though every day I get at least 10-15 emails of pure spam anyway. If I like someone and feel comfortable, I give them my email address as a sign of friendship.
