Lies and Damned Lies

What makes a lie is not inaccuracy
it's dishonesty, the desire to deceive

if someone will lie to you
they will also steal and connive and cheat

and if they lie when the truth will do
turn and run is best for you

-----
what do you think about lies and liars?

Obvsiouly I assume you're talking about serious lies, and not the little white lies, like "Hun, you look fine...", if that's what we're talking about, serious, manipulative liars, then I think liars are the lowest of the low, I despise them.

A guy can scream and shout at me, or trade punches with me, and we can dust ourselves off afterwards, and put things straight again, but a liar is a born coward, who you can never trust.

You throw a punch at me, or scream and shout at me, it's up front, it's honest, everyone can see what's going on, and judge whether it's justified or not.

They can see if you're a bully, or a valiant defender, but a liar is different, as they seek to manipulate others, in their attempt to hurt their "foe", so they don't just attack one person, in an "honest" way, they attack, and insult, everyone.

Some one who is a liar, on that basis, is not only a coward, but some one who has no respect for anyone else, they are anti-social, and a menance to anyone they are around.

They really are the lowest of the low, and I'd take the violent, and the foul mouthed, over a liar, any day.

I agree, X
sure, we all lie on a petit level, 'hon, you look fine.' has no ulterior intent, it's just socially expeditious. And sometimes we are mistaken, that's not a lie, it's a mistake. But lies intended to deceive or hide the facts are different. Plus, there are active lies (which I prefer because they at least demonstrate creativity) and there are lies of omission, which I hate. Yes, they are cowardly.

And the worst lies are the ones that we tell to ourselves. You have to be a really good liar to lie to yourself. These are also the most pernicious lies. Worse than cancer.

Once somebody lies to me, it's over. After that they might as well be talking in pantomime to me. I don't listen to a word they say.

The term GIGO (garbage in, garbage out) is true in life as well. I try to keep the garbage out in the first place. Once a person lies to me they become irrelevant.

My first press agent said to me, "don't ever lie to the press. If you do, you are dead. They'll never talk to you again."

There are lies and then there are lies.

XPress is right on the money.

But then there's this type of white lie also....

When you ask someone "how are you?" and you are doing terrible and have personal problems you really don't want to discuss, you say, "Fine, thank you."

That's another type of white lie. But there's a good reason for it. It can mean several things ...

1) The person you asked doesn't want to dump his or her problems on you because that's not polite and it's also uncomfortable for both parties.

and / or

2) The person you asked doesn't think how he or she is REALLY doing is any of your business.

Just ask me how I'm doing today and I'll tell you. I'm fine thank you.

how many shades of white lies are there?

I suppose you could call black an extreme shade of white.

White is the totality of all the light in the spectrum.

There are infinite shades.

and there are infinite lies

I try to avoid lies
because there is nothing so embarrassing as being caught in one

just call it poetic license.
And I would lie to you for your love
Yes I'd lie to you for your love
I'd lie to you for your love
And that's the truth
I always liked that song

My problem is I don't give a dam
I don't care enough to lie.

Lie when necessary only..I do know liars hate liars..
If you don't like my lies, then don't believe them.
May the one amongst you who never lied, cast the first stone.
It's a lie to say I've never lied.

that's a frank take on it tony
(when somebody precedes a statement with 'frankly' or 'honestly', I know I'm about to hear a lie)

good lies require the appearance of honesty

but when someone lies to me
they quickly fall off my radar screen
they are no longer worthy of my attention

'when the ears hear the truth, the heart respects the lips that say it."
likewise
if I have to second guess someone, guess what? they only get one guess

Re: song lyrics. Kim Carnes did it, some other people covered it too.

Would you lie to your children to protect them from danger?
The most common lie is that which one lies to himself; lying to others is relatively an exception.

No!
lies don't protect anyone except the liar (or so they imagine)

what will protect a child is to be armed with the truth

If it is beyond the child's ability to understand the danger, then what?
