Question about metal doors

I have an exterior metal door ... my front door... i guess it's metal. It seems like it's metal.
anyway, today I can't lock my top lock. It's too weird.
The sun is shining directly on it. And it's hot. Can the sun expand the door or door jamb so that you can't turn the lock into the hole?
I don't know how else to explain it. The mechanism works. When the door is open, I can turn the lock. But when it's closed, I can't get it to turn all the way to fit into the hole where the latch is supposed to go.
I'm here by myself and sorta felt a little frightened for a minute... paranoid that someone knows I'm here by myself and has messed with the lock so it doesn't work. But that's just crazy! Isn't it?
Seriously, can a metal door expand or be effected by hot sunshine to effect the operation of a lock?
I've had this door for several years. The lock has always worked before!
