Why doesn't the US use the metric system?

Why doesn't the US use the metric system like the rest of the world?
My theory is that it keeps the US citizens in the dark and makes the rest of the world think we're stupid.

Say no to the metric system, we don't want no foreign "rulers"
Somethng I saw in Mad Magine a long time ago comes to mind.

that's so funny! I used to love Mad Magazine back in the day. Haven't seen it for years.
I DO wish we all used the same measuring systems in this world.
It's a pain in the butt to try to figure out what the temperature is in other countries and how much water to drink every day and the distance between one place and another.
