Re: I want to change something
when i was younger i wanted to do something vital that would change things on a large scale.
Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway and amazing mechanical limbs and the wheel-chair that elevates to eye-level, and a brilliant water purifier (tiny in size but able to purify water for an entire village), is my ideal of someone who uses his brain to change the world.
Now, after working in education, i think that no matter how huge my concept is, it all comes down to an individual. If i can help one other person, i've changed the world one tiny iota.
So, my idea - encourage a person to tell her/his story. Record stories of inspiring people. This circulates energy.
But James, i'm 'old' - it takes younger energy to take this brainstorm and make it fly.
There's room for intense effort in one particular sphere to radically make a difference.

Re: I want to change something
It's a noble ideal to want to work for or establish charitable organizations and to want to give to people. I'm all for that!
Not sure of the "free rice" thing is real, to be honest.... not sure who sponsors it, etc, and just clicking on a link? How does that give rice to people? Just a side thought.
Suggestions:
Non-profit charitable organizations aren't all that easy to start, however it CAN be done, of course, with a well thought out business plan and access to resources to get it off the ground. Volunteering is a wonderful idea and there are many worthwhile causes who are always in dire need of volunteers. You might consider selecting those organizations which best suit your ideals of who you'd like to help and how you'd like to help (there are a myriad of them and focusing on too many at once can be overwhelming). So, narrowing it down to 1, 2, or 3, which fit into your parameters of who and how you'd like to help, then contacting them to see what they need, would be a good idea. I'm a big fan of Habitat for Humanity. Even working for them for a few months would be worthwhile.
Another idea is that after you've selected the already-established non-profit charitable organizations with which you'd like to participate, that you link to them on your website(s) with "donate to this organization" links, directing visitors to the websites for those organizations and that you create a dedicated page for each organization you intend to support.
Bowing to you for your ideals and energy and hopes to better the world. Two places to start looking are the Gates Foundation (Bill Gates has a wonderful foundation established for philanthropic purposes and is working with what's-his-name... oh crap... wealthy philanthropist who I admire so much (I'm like judih.. i'm old... hah... we're the same age.. mind goes blank).... anyway, I saw him interviewed on Charlie Rose and one of their goals is to get the 2% elite wealthy world citizens to agree to give away a certain percentage of their money every year. (feed the hungry, provide free education, develop alternative energy resources, house the homeless and much more). http://www.gatesfoundation.org/Pages/home.aspx
Another worthwhile charitable organization is Ralph Nader's organization. He also wants to change the world in very positive ways. http://learningtogive.org/papers/paper174.html
...........
Hook up with the already-established organizations which best fit your visions, then see how you can help.
Although I am a Mac user and never have been fond of the PC or Windows operating system (hah!), I'm a huge admirer of Bill Gates and his Foundation for philanthropy
............
Quick thoughts on a Sunday morning. Now I need to go do the work I didn't do yesterday. Haha!

Re: I want to change something
25 five years ago I wanted to be a mix of Che Guevara, Mother Theresa and Albert the doctor... now I guess I have enough entertainment/compromise with my daily sphere of influence... I teached to weave in telar to my students two days ago as I way to not festejar 12th october 1492 and we all were very happy and enthusiastic, I don´t know...
About charity: I´m a bit suspicious of big organizations, so I can´t really work well in them, I guess I´m an individualist with socialist ideals, sort of a paradox...

Re: I want to change something
Mother Teresa seems about the main reason I was forced to not kick religion entirely to the curb after "9/11," reflecting on it all, in the desert, as I reflected on her selflessness. if it wasn't for her, I would have probably said, shit-can the whole thing. so maybe that old propaganda is true... one vote can make a difference. not sure about that..

Reading about what is going on in Hungry. I would like to convince the people I live with to recycle the millions of Aluminum cans they pop everyday.
No not really. Everything is perfect. I would not change a thing

Suppose god really is a republican?
Re: I want to change something
no doubt, GOD! is republican. they out-bid the other side. and swung the "vote." was there a "vote?" hmm...
anyway, i mean, i'm like pavlov's dog here, hate who i'm told to hate, by association. ring the bell, i'm ready to eat, to murder people I don't know. seems reasonable.. seems like history.

Re: I want to change something
I don't know what type of content the small book would contain or who would buy it. Donating a book to charity is nice but is there money in it? I created a book for the Studio8 members... an anthology of poetry, art, and photography with 38 contributers. If you send me your address, I'll buy you one and send it to you. It's called "Infinite Tide".

I'd help you do a book for charity,
if you want some contributed writings, just catch me up on it.
I'm game especially if it helps kids.
