The Meaning of “Man-up”
By Beth Marlowe
We live in truly weird times when female political candidates are telling their male opponents to “man up!” If you’re interested in seeing female candidates taken seriously, this is not a good thing.
Not one but two of them did it last night, as Anne Kornblut reports. In Nevada, tea partier Sharron Angle told her debate opponent, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to “man up” on the topic of Social Security. In Missouri, Democrat Robin Carnahan told her Senate opponent, Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), to “man up” on health care. All this took place about two months after Sarah Palin accused Barack Obama of lacking “cojones.” And after Senate hopeful Christine O’Donnell took to the radio to hilariously tell opponent Mike Castle, “This is not a bake-off, get your man-pants on.”
Okay so it’s funny. (especially the last one.)
But let’s think about this for a second: To have the authority to say what she said, O’Donnell is implying that she already has her man-pants on and buttoned. And this makes her the better candidate. By telling their opponents to “man up,” all of these women are saying they are more manly—and that that’s a good thing.

Re: Christine O’Donnell is twice the man i am.
talk about the times they are a'changing, eh? we men walk carefully around women for fear of being called some derogatory word and then there are some women who call men derogatory words anyway. i'm glad most women aren't like these examples of political wannabees or else our society would be in serious trouble... seriously.

I don't think that is what concerns Beth Marlowe Cecil. I don't think her concern is with what is derogatory to men. She thinks the remarks are derogatory to women. Not sure I get what she is saying either. Pencil skirts? I never knew what those things were called. hmm. I sure do likes women in penicl skirts. Even if they are set on world domination. Could they do any worse than men in blue suits?
I.
Should have posted the whole article it makes her point I think.
Let me give you the rest of the story.

This doesn’t do women any favors.
It’s not really the candidates’ fault. This idea is so embedded in our culture and in our language that it’s hard to spot. Male words are strong. “Cojones” or “balls” is a synonym for courage. I have no cojones. Can I be courageous?
This is the same idea that had women wearing shoulder pads in the 1980s, the kind of feminism that says: to be taken seriously, women must be like men.
I say we leave that argument in the 1980s, and move on. Let’s admit that courage and chutzpah are not a gender-specific. Let’s admit that feminine qualities are not weak. If having cojones and wearing man-pants are signs of strength and power, then certainly having a stomach that shows you powered through hours of excruciating labor or wearing a pencil skirt that means you made it to the corner office, certainly those are signs of strength and power, too.

got me to thinking, Jack... the real power of women shines thru when they are nude... or can be visualized as such.

Yes I was thinking about the power too.
How it flows between nude men and women.
But mostly i was thinking about the girl in my seventh grade homeroom class wearing a pencil skirt and bobbysox back in 1952, and how one morning without a thought in my head I found myself walking around with tented pants after I saw her standing there.
Weird is that she was the only girl in that school that could do that to me? Was it true love?

attraction has a mind of it's own, apparently... i've 'caught' myself more than once staring at some woman then suddenly realizing this woman wasn't the type i was normally drawn to (visually speaking...). i believe that's when our biology takes over mind and spirit and does what it do.

I am trying to think of what type woman I am normally drawn to.
Faces, ah their faces Cecil. They kill me. And I long for those long cool gazes as she studies, contemplates the man before her. And the smile that came on slowly as she sat on the edge of the bed
god I love them all Cecil.
Lately I have been drawn the Ruth Bader Ginsburg types god bless her.

Throughout my own short life (!), I've found that there isn't any one single thing that I look for while perusing the wonderful world of women (Soo is very used to my eye wondering, knowing that I'm merely doing what nature has me do : look).
Initially I may be attracted to a woman's hair or her smile... some women's legs are a powerful attraction... and her complexion is always a draw... but in my older years I find I truly appreciate a healthy looking woman... a sparkle in her eyes, a joy for life, her laughter or general demeanor.... really too many things to narrow it down to any simple single quality or gift... and that is the beauty of 'girl watching', eh?

Remember this?
Another world
another time
when men still whistled at women.
Before burquas came into fashion.
Sorry I don't know what I am talking about. I am rambling. Good night Cecil
but
Mostly
I watch my eyes, I try to be conscious of their the stochastic movements from breasts to tush, to crotch, before I am aware of where I am looking.
When I am conscious of where I am looking it is her face and eyes that draw me in.
I am still a solipsizer of women.
