Gamifying a business

Post by judih » May 4th, 2013, 10:28 am

So, I'm taking a course in Gamification and I'm on my 3rd and final written assignment.
I need to help gamify a business dealing in collaborative consumption - that is to say, sharing of goods, services, houses, etc.

People log in, receive the site's currency by offering to share something and then can use that currency to share somebody's else's thing.

So, my job is to make the whole business rock n'roll through techniques of gamification - like offering elements to make it all more fun, more compelling through the idea of making a greener planet through sharing, giving points for certain behaviour (such as offering advice, or recommendation, or organizing an event)

My question: How would a website look for such a company? Would design serve to make it more fun? Would people care if they got badges and bells and whistles? Or is that our of fashion?

Any ideas?

PS - I'm taking the course through Coursera, a platform that hosts 1000s of University courses for free! and it's a sensational course. May 6, I'm beginning a course in Psychology....

badges and bells and whistles
they still work here
Fiesta Badges are all the rage in Old San Antone
This year there was even an Ozzie Osborne badge
which cause quite a kerfuffle

best wishes for all the badges bells and whistles you can get
I love Coursera
Still the eternal college sophomore I been taking courses at Yale, Mit, and Sanford

This was U. of Penn. Great platform

I finished my assignment - now still have to assess peer's essays and then do a final exam.

what a relief to hand in a paper. It's almost worth the torture of writing it.

cool!

psychology is starting with the history
and the story of LIttle Albert - the poor kid who was conditioned to be afraid of furry creatures (even stuffed ones). Yay, psychology! There's evidence that the thing was rigged, but so what, isn't if fun to experiment with unknowing victims. hurrah.

hope we get into a different sort of fun soon

I am seriously thinking about it. RE: Mindy McAdams et al
I am thinking in terms of screen shots, I will try to find some of the ones that are most intriguing. Why do I find some websites more interesting and useful than others?

gamify a bussiness lets call it education :?

please pardon the user name, I usually try to confine her to the asylum for the terminally vain. BUt I can't shut her up this morning

What constitutes a basic unit of cybermedia will be an important consideration for those who design its interface. A "basic unit" is the smallest fragment within a medium that can be taken out or isolated and still be enjoyed or understood as a complete work; that is, a fragment possessing closure.

Psychology? I missed something, ...where is the link to that?

the last course in Gamification ----------background for trying to insert gamification into education ------led to this current course in Psychology

First week - background
and some of the more infamous experiments conducted while trying to measure human capacity and conditioning
Little Albert - found on wiki here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Albert_experiment

thanks so much for giving thought to my original question.
i'm trying to build a trivia quiz in the way of gaming. Where to hit them with a surprise bonus.
How to design the look of the thing

It's fascinating!
And my target audience is 13-14 years old - whose soundtracks are trance, etc (not my personal soundtrack)

hi. It was liked. I was given the highest marks by peers - but the criteria were that I fulfilled the conditions of the assignment, rather than the quality of my ideas. I loved it because it helped me integrate what I learned.

The SmartPhone Trivia Quiz was built and tested on 10 groups of students. The 7th graders were totally enthusiastic. The 8th graders were slightly more interested in using their SmartPhones to watch a leaked video clip of some of their classmates engaging in activities of which I only heard rumours.

so, timing is everything.
Thanks for asking!

Back to the drawing board.

That's so interesting! And coincidental as well.

Yesterday I was talking with my neighbor, whose son just got his degree in psychology. (I'm sorry I don't remember now which one, he already had a BS and was a counselor). Anyway, he had to take the test 3 times to pass it ... because his first two times he was focusing on how he would determine and help the the fictitious person, rather than just put down what the examiner was expecting to see.

Which to me points out the fallacies within tests and testings, that being the vast majority of them are designed to judge us on well we can parrot back whomever the predetermined pat answers they are looking for, rather than determine what we actually know, or the quality of how we would use and apply our knowledge in actual life.

Forcing students to adjust (contract) backwards to fit or get through the limitations of testing structure ... just to pass ... so they can then launch forward and expand again. A game that we're forced to play, just to pass, to get a paper that says it's okay for us to move on - or that we're good at something. Frustrating and annoying to me. (sorry, I digression)

Keep following your quality J ... actually, I already know you will, and do.
So ... Good!

Oh my! Ha!
Sounds right for the age group(s). Put you in a rather awkward spot.
You're a brave lady teaching those age groups. They can be so challenging. But also rewarding.

I find all this very interesting.

next year - apparently one more time I'll be with 8th graders - (the infamous year of hormone blast!)

but i'll be ready, i shall pursue the trail of gamification to lure them into learning...
