Hebrew Text

Post by bennie » March 1st, 2005, 10:39 am

Nothing interesting here. Sorry.

I just want to know why hebrew text runs from right to left.

When I do searches on various search engines I'm presented with a list ways to get the text to display properly in web browsers. but no info as to why it runs that way.

thanks
well I write music review so I do:

why does it run from right to left?
cause that's how it's supposed to be.

why does chinese go from up to down?
cause that's how it's supposed to go.

why does sign language stick to the fingers?
cause that's how it's supposed to stick.

I thought is was because Talmudic scholars were cross-eyed

thanks for the input, miss smart arse.

Is there a reason for it?

Or is it just the way it is? I assumed that it was easier to scan from left to right and if the texts were written differently to that it was for some specific reason.

If you don't know, just say "I don't know," I won't think less of you

bennay

the only reason that it is easier for you to scan from left to right
is because that is the way you are used to doing it.

It's like driving on the left side of the road like you do or on the right like I do. My friend had a Bentley one time with the steering wheel on the right. It was great to arrive at a gig in it, but it was a pain to drive on the freeway.

Every time I go to Jamaica, it takes me a few days to get accostomed to driving on the left side of the road. But after that, it's as easy as reading Hebrew.

(I heard that in China, they drive on the underside of the bridges)

uh, yeah
that would = don't know

but if it helps, (oh no, she's doing it again), hebrew comes from aramaic. That's a good start. Find out why they did it that way.

yes, i know, you'll thank me later
There's a lovely museum in Jerusalem with all kinds of ancient scrolls (they should provide a good starting point)

I think the world, in general, could use a good turn from right to left, about now....

(I don't know, either)

then there's the old mechanical maxim:

righty, tighty
lefty, loosey

(that's the formula for inserting or removing a screw)

"righty-tighty"..... yeah, I could see that..... except for a screw loose in the Oval Office.

.....quite the paradox....

or something like that.
