Regional Expressions

Post by stilltrucking » April 15th, 2005, 1:11 am

I should use more emoticons, I know it wasn't your ass.

I don't remember ever seeing you show your ass either here or on litkicks.

I was joking.
But I was curious about the language. Is that just a expression from NASCAR country or does it mean the same out in la la land?
You mentioned it a couple of times so I wanted yu to know I meant no insult.

Like i said I wish I could be catholic, but I can't. but it was bothering me, so now I am going to throw five hail Mary's and rest on my laurels. Sing the old high school fraternity pep song, if you want to get the girls who will pet, you got to be a football hero, but we changed it too "you got to be from theta episilon"

good night professor where ever you are.

But even though I don't understand what or who you are referring to, I do enjoy regional colloquialisms.

I used to live on Cape Cod in Massachussetts some years back.

Up there, they have some expressions which people in Virginia don't have.

For instance.... they say, "It's wicked cold outside!"

And "I'll make a run to the packy" - The packy is the "package store" which is their term for the liquor store.

And they say, "Let's have grinders for lunch" - A grinder is a "hoagie" in New York City and a "submarine sandwich" in Virginia.

Do you know of any more regional colloquialisms?

I love them!

n in America where people say "tend to" to mean "I was planning to do that", or something similar.
Does anyone know where they say that?
Is it Maine?

They say that here in Virginia... but I don't know about elsewhere.

Like ..."I need to tend to my chores."

In Texas, they say, "I'm fixin' to go to the store" meaning, "I'm getting ready to go to the store."

I've heard that!

"I tend to my bidness."

I think I heard it in a line in a movie!

Sorry you all....I'm in a silly mood...I'll snap out of it sooner or later!

Can you imagine superman with a lard ass?

West coast, shine it on. maybe my favorite

Texas, hang tight

Maryland, hang loose

The whole nine yards, Texas I think

I used to have a friend from Wales, I got in the habit of using

Bloody hell and bugger this.

Iwaco Washington, the captain said "Lets give it the suicide try."
I liked that one too, meaning, we better get it this time.

Shit happens, that used to mean a lot back in early the eighties.

"You was walking in tall cotton."
I always feel that way in your garden.

hammer hammer,

In Canuckleville, dependant on province and where in a province:

Newfoundland: Lord Thundering Jesus!..but because of their accents it usually ends up sounding like ...Ord Tundrin Jesos! So I really don' know if it counts as blasphemy.

Quebec: A lot of dis ting and dat fuck'n ting and "Tabernacs"

Ontario: Well most of Northern Ontario fits into either the Quebec ting of dis and dats or the stereotypical "Eh?" or Abowt, Douwt, shouwt.

The prarie provinces are pretty much the same as Northern Ontario but with a few more mullets and less scenery.

And the west coast its all about the Chiba...ariba the chiba....much like the eskimos and snow, BC has a million words for weed.

Other than that the most popular phrase in Canada is probably..."Fucking Americans, fucking shit up again" lol...just kidding but come on, if we elected Bush as our prime minister, wouldn't you all be saying the same thing?? lol
