Before lying down for a nap, I searched the Net in a cursory way for the source of your quote.

All I seem to be able to determine is that some 18th century French writers liked embedding it in their texts, and that it's a favoirte quip at the Kiwanis and Breakfast Lions meetings.

But I DID find this neat site about Japanese inventions. Perhaps one of these will spawn a column?
