Reflections and Projections for Studio Eight 2006
I would like to give a personal thank-you to all the participants (no, I should say collaborators) in the S8 project.
Doreen and I try to keep the ashtrays empty and the floors swept here, but you guys are the reason that this community is alive.
I don't know why this online community is in a different class than most. Maybe it's just that every parent thinks his child is the most beautiful on earth. But I have surveyed numerous discussion boards and my observation is that the quality of discourse here is above the median line.
This community has developed in its own organic way. Doreen and I didn't build it. You built it. And if you build it, I will cum.
I think we have all lucked out. Maybe it's just that birds of a feather flock together. The people that gravitate here are in general (1.) serious about their work, whatever it may be. (2.) courteous and humane and (3.) have more sense than god gave a screwdriver.
Part of our good fortune is that many of us have met in person. The boundaries of distance and border and technology haven't prevented us from touching one another. We perceive each other as real people and not just cyber creatures.
Studio Eight has a life of its own, like any real community. I just think this community happens to be particularly rich. We have developed a rolling, real-time art gallery-magazine-talk radio show-night club. It's an amazing thing. I have watched many internet communities degenerate into spats and name calling and useless babble, but I haven't seen that here. The content is rich and the level of bullshit is low.
This is not because of anything that doreen or I have done. I think it's just because we have all been extremely fortunate to find people of like mind and disposition. We seem to have one thing in common--we are dedicated to our pursuits, whatever they are, be it writing or art or music or theater or just the art of living.
This is my official statement of love for you all. May we continue to enrich each other's lives in the coming year. (I'm not mentioning any names--you know who you are.)
