i am about to go on the road with my dad in about 4 weeks...itinerary includes ottawa to chicago to south dakota...burning falt-top as fast as i can...then i'm gonna toodle around the badlands for a day and check out rushmore and crazy horse...then it's off to jackson followed by yellowstone...we'll then head north to the bitterroot valley, continuing north to idaho and take highway 2 across washington state, before heading north to vancouver

what i'm looking for are recommendations of things to see, detours to take, stuff to avoid, based on that itinerary, and based on personal experience

many thanks in advance

Well, that route can be tricky in winter driving conditions..... but I'm sure you already knew that.

Swing by Seattle and I might buy ya a beer.

That is, if I'm not gone by then...

i'm guessing the tricky part is the jackson to seattle bit...definitely will have to check forecasts each night

probably won't stop in seattle with pops with me...gotta see some family in vancouver

Well, if you change your mind, lemme know.

Yeah. I enjoyed the Badlands. Check out the Wall Drug, S.D. tourist trap. It's an interesting place, and it's right on that stretch of highway, if I recall correctly....

in my experience, Knip.....it is best to avoid the police by any means necassary. Policemen have an amazing knack at ruining road trips.

Not much of a problem in winter with the bugs, but try to keep your windshield clean. If you are gong to be driving long haul you got to watch out for highway hypnosis. You wind up staring at a spot on the windshield and before you know it you are looking at the tip of your nose. Then the fun starts. I have seen many strange things on the road when I have been up thirty-six hours. I was driving along with my eyes wide open and there was a large brown bear on a ten-speed bike in front of me. I tried to pass him but he kept speeding up. Then I kind of figured it out. How the hell could there be a bear in front of me going 70 mph on bike? Strange feeling when you can't trust your eyeballs. What is even more embarrassing is when you talk in your sleep on the CB radio. I have had some surreal conversations like that.

Yabyum I been thinking about you. And my karma on the Internet.

knip there is the Wounded Knee Memorial I think it's around the area of the Badlands. Yeah watch out for that weather there's a bad one coming through that area right now. Best to keep an eye on it.
