I like to Volunteer

Believe me I am not looking for praise here.
Most of us seem to have no spare time in our busy lives but my husband Scott and I like to Volunteer.
I don't know if any of you give or have given any of your free time to anything. I have built houses for Habitat for Humanity. I have cleaned up the river just to make it clean, gave blood and been dunked in a water tank to raise money. I have always been a volunteer for something and..... I have fun doing it.
I have been a Hospice volunteer for over 10 years now and I have an American Cancer Society meeting tonight. Last Thursday I did a function for Hospice that raised $41,000 dollars for children in the US and Costa Rica. I worked with the dieing patients for a while but it's hard. Now I work Hospice Camp for survivor children. These are kids who lost a parent, brother or sister. It might have been a car accident or cancer It doesn't matter we bring them together and try and help them heal. I have also done Homicide Camp with the Jacksonville's Sheriff's Office.
Here are some pictures of hospice camp they will make you smile:

cool, Kelly. Very cool that you're publicizing the healing work that you're involved in.
Give us more positive. We need it so! Eating it up.

No idea
I was asking a question
But you know what a sh*t writer I am
maybe I did not make myself clear.
I have no idea what it is. I was just curious

kelly? care to elaborate?
i imagine a lot of group therapy, artistically expressive sessions, sharing, laughing, crying, converting energy from the place of fear to the place of objectification.
i've done work in psychodrama and various expressive therapies like puppet, art and movement, music and writing. There's nothing better than being in a secure environment and being given the opportunity to express inner trauma to a receptive group.
Still-T, there's nothing wrong with asking. We all benefit by questioning what's being said.
i was just playing with the name as a name. Nothing personal.

I tell you homicide is personal to me.
They have a body farm in Tennessee run by the coroner's office. They plant dead bodies and let them decompose, and then they train police to investigate crime scenes. I thought it might be something like that. But I think you were closer to the truth
The first thing that came to mind was this bit I posted to my artlog.
I forgot about Mr G, Randy Newman song I suppose. Or a convicted killer on the run.

WD has made me aware of my deficiencies as a writer. I just figured I had confused you.
I spent a long dark night of the soul contemplating murder about thirty years ago. The only thing that stopped me was the thought of running. I was not thinking about a perfect murder. I was only thinking about doing it quick. I never thought about getting away with it. Only running maybe and getting caught and spending my life in prision or worse. In the sweet light of the dawning new day I blew it off. What a relief, I figured I had it coming. Just karma I said. Then I took the bus from Astoria Oregon to Nashville Tennessee and joinded a Quaker meeting there.

Yes the children of murder victims. Talk about doing good work.
I don't volunteer much to organizations any more. I was a tutor at Junior Village in Washington DC and I have worked at a church sponsored center for Autistic children in Virginia, and a counselor at a summer camp for under privileged children. But these days I try to just practice random acts of kindness. I would like to work with autistic children again.

Good question!
First let me say that I am not good at writing or spelling.
Homicide Camp
This is where we bring children together to help them heal. We do special games and crafts and we have patrol officers from the sheriffs department in plain clothes that some of the children know or have met in uniform. The best part is that they meet other children who have had a similar experience so their not alone. I had a young girl who watched her father shoot her mother in the head. We had a boy who's father was tazered by the police and died.
That boy was very angry and did not want to come to camp but within a couple of hours was helping us by talking to the younger children.

Hi Kelly,
My name is Deb and my greatest love is volunteering at
Lindsay Wildlife Hospital, and taking care of injured and misplaced non-domestic animals. I've been doing this for four years now, and my love for this type of work keeps me expanding.
I was also a hospice volunteer (for 6 years), it was a moving/life changing experience for me and while I don't actively do hospice any longer I've found that once you've done hospice, you never really stop doing hospice. My hospice training and experiences have been helpful in all areas of my life, including my work in the wildlife field that I do now.
I want to share an article from my local paper that shows how much volunteering has become an established part in a much larger, and continually growing way of life… being… for all ages:
Youths Led By Compassion
Your Homicide Camp work is exciting and you’re correct, the pictures did make me smile. Thank you for sharing them.

What an admirable life you lead, Kelly! It's beautiful that you offer your time and energies to help so many people!
Great work you're doing too, Deb & judih! StillT has volunteered too! Excellent!
Every day I volunteer, myself.
I volunteer to get up in the morning.
Oh, except on the days I don't have the energy.
Keep on doing your good work!

"I am also a member of the RED HAT society and I sometimes can be seen driving around Jacksonville in A Purple 1956 GMC pickup truck."
... a purple, 1956 GMC pickup truck with side-steps, complete with white-walls and a matching front windshield shade. Now that's a classic.
Nice truck.
