Where Do You Keep the Beat?

One of my musical friends is a diabetic and he unfortunately had to have his foot amputated recently. He is a guitar player and band leader. He usually sits on a stool at center stage and keeps the beat for the band with his foot.
When I was told about his unfortunate amputation, I had to wonder which foot it was and how did he keep the beat now? Does he use the other foot to keep the beat?
I think it has to do with right and left brain stuff. You know what I mean. When you jack-off with your right hand, it feels like you are....well, jacking-off. But when you do it with your left hand it almost feels like someone else is doing it.
I usually keep the beat in my head, but when I use my feet for a metronome, I find that when I'm playing the guitar, I keep the beat with my right foot, and when I play the piano, I keep it with both feet. Where do you keep the beat?
