I have a very bad feeling in my gut

Post by hester_prynne » September 12th, 2010, 10:43 pm

I have a very bad feeling in my gut about that pipe explosion in San Bruno. I mean, people were calling the gas company for about ten days prior, reporting the rotten egg smell and the gas co did nothing! Apparently, they made some checks, but then they would just leave without telling people who called reports in what was up???
I tell you, I don't like this and I'm very worried......
I'd be interested in your thoughts...

Not to worry Hester the pipeline is scheduled for repair in 2013.

PG&E Saw San Bruno Pipeline As "Unacceptably" High Risk

As early as 2007, Pacific Gas & Electric Company officials considered a portion of the gas main that ruptured and triggered the deadly San Bruno blaze on Thursday to be at "unacceptably" high risk for failure, according to documents obtained by The Bay Citizen........

The utility company had planned to repair by 2013 a 7,481-foot long section of pipe, which it deemed-based on internal risk assessments made in 2007 - one of PG&E's "top 100 highest risk line sections."

so these (sometimes) crumbling, inadequately managed fossil fuel energy infrastructures apparently are a serious threat to more than just faceless poor folks overseas (e.g. the ongoing history/pattern of significant oil spills in nigeria by big oil). faceless folks here too. sickening. and just scary. could/should much more of these massive energy sector profits we seem to hear about continually be used to maintain what's already in place and in service? dunno. sure as hell seems like it. no, that would be excessive socialism. but it was only a "utility company," so what could they really do? put it off another three years, I guess.

How did PG&E know it was at risk?
As of now, there's no indication of what triggered PG&E's concern over the San Bruno pipe.

How Do You Inspect a Natural-Gas Pipeline?
With pigs, of course.

Our neighborhood is natural gas supplied. We've had individual houses blow up here, in Chattanooga, but not whole neighborhoods. You'd think there would be some kind of "fail safe" device they could key in...probably low on the "to do" list.

That was a horrible explosion in that town. Made me ill, too. Hope they find all the bodies, etc.
