I seem to remember being seventeen. I lived in Abilene.
The young journalist I
Had interviewed the mayor and the football coach
and the founder of the John Birch Society, Robert Welch
I won first prize in the State for column writing.
So, I got into the woody station wagon of my journalism teacher, Mrs. Tandy
with a gaggle of aspiring writers and photographers and went to a press convention in Ft. Worth. There I met Dan Rather and also Bill Moyers. They were speaking at the convention because at the time they were the rising young stars of Texas journalism.
Moyers was the one I was most impressed with, but Rather projected a passion for journalistic principles. The Story was the most important thing to Rather and the analysis was more important to Moyers.
At any rate, I would like to salute my fellow Texan on his abdication of the Throne of Cronkite (another Texan)
So Long, Dan
