Well, ummm , it was KANSAS, first of all.
I know some folks down here from KANSAS. I wouldn't call them stupid. They're not stupid. Not at all. But they're SIMPLE, in both the best and worst sense of word. They worry about the immediate, about what's practical, about what best serves their purposes. The IDEA of freedom, of free speech, of the freedom of OTHER countries from unprovoked aggression, might be a little above them.
I don't mean to generalize, even though I am grossly doing this. I am not exactly talking about Kansans, but about the majority of AMERICANS.
We are essentially and "I, me, mine" nation. We think about what's good for our economic future and we put the rest aside.
Lots of people in this country could shut the fuck up if they had a lot of money and a cushy lifestyle. Not me. Not you. Not most of the people who frequent this website -- but the average American could forget all about ideals if their daily troubles were close to the zero point.
These people believe Bush is speaking to them --bringing wealth to this country. He lies.
As for the Iraqi -- sorry but I am not surprised. Yes, Saddam Hussein was oppressing them. The question is whether we should have supported his regime at all. Answer: we never should have. If we'd disapproved from the outset, he would not have gotten so powerful. Now, what about all the OTHER dictators we're supporting? A GREAT country does not aid and abet psychotic dictators and then turn around and obliterate them on a whim. Great, that we blasted this guy into the stratosphere. Too bad that we had to blast SO MANY INNOCENT people along with him. If we'd done right from the start, this would not have happened.
And from the American POV, this whole thing was wrong, because the attack on Iraq was predicated on a LIE.
Here's my question:
Why do we fail to see the truth when it is right before us?
And, why do we need to LIE in order to correct our previous falsehoods?
