Translation from Babel Fish
The nourishing collapse

By Raul Dellatorre
The governors of four countries of Sur and Central America, adhered to the Bolivariana Alternative for the towns of America, DAWN, signed yesterday an agreement for the implementation of programs that guarantee the regional nourishing sovereignty. Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua and Bolivia summoned to an extraordinary summit of urgency to in the last treat the explosive political situation country (to see more note information "the region takes care of Bolivia") and the problems related to the nourishing security, from the constant increases in the prices of the agricultural raw materials.

Carlos Lage, Cuban vice-president, and the heads of government of Nicaragua and Bolivia, Daniel Moral Ortega and Evo, respectively, arrived afternoon at Caracas between and night of Tuesday. They maintained several meetings with his host, Hugo Chávez, and at noon they could yesterday present/display the reached agreement to altogether undertake "integral programs of agro-industrial development in cereals, mainly rice and maize; leguminosas, frijol, oily, meats, milk and water for irrigation of seeding ". In order to take it to the practice, the creation of a bottom with an initial capital of 100 million dollars was committed.

The subject of the nourishing security gained space in the international debates quickly, when evident becoming that the present tendency to raises it of the prices of the raw materials is not going to revert itself. The rise of the 30 to the 70 percent, in less of a year, of the products that compose world-wide the nutritional diet put on the alert to analysts and civil employees, conscious of the threat of the political and social crises that could happen with the massive landslide of population towards the most extreme marginality. Tunisia and Haiti already declared the nourishing emergency. And they will not be the unique ones.

During the encounter made in the Miraflores Palace, seat of government in Caracas, the representatives of the countries that they integrate the ALCA warned on the political responsibility of the dominant blocks in the present crisis. "This crisis demonstrates the historical failure of Capitalism", cried out Chávez. Lage, vice-president of Cuba, executive secretary of the Cabinet and economist, were the one who it developed in form more documented the consequences of this agricultural product increase for the world.

The industrialized nations, indicated, destine near the 10 percent of their income to the food purchase, in as much the poor men and underdeveloped they arrive until the 65 percent. "the poorest economies do not have answer to face that scene", warned, indicating that this crisis is "part of a capitalist logic where concerns the gain and not to satisfy necessities".

"the nourishing crisis affects everybody, it are expressed in the growth of prices and causes inflation, a world-wide inflation of which nobody is saved." Like example of the impact in indispensable consumptions in the diet of poor countries, Lage it indicated that one ton of rice that in 2002 was worth 220 dollars, today is commercialized in 860 dollars and "operations are already made, with delivery to a year, that quote to 1200 dollars the ton".

While the underdevelopeds are those that undergo the consequences more, "there is an irresponsible handling of the economy of the United States, in recession" and spilling his costs to the rest of the world, it accused Lage. "In one recent meeting of the World Bank one announced that one would request to the powers 500 million dollars to face the subject. What are 500 million in these circumstances? What are going to solve? It is a deceit, a lie! If Cuba only, by the prices, is going to need this year billion dollars more than in the previous one to concern foods."

Lage proclaimed that "the governments have the responsibility to attenuate the inflationary effects" on foods in their own economies. As if one was a direct answer, few hours later it was known that Brazil suspended to the exports of rice of its inventories public (existence into the hands of the State) and will request to the private sector that does the same, to defend the internal market and to resist the rises of prices.
We have huge surpluses in rice here but the big discount food stores have started rationing sales because people are starting to hoard food.

This bit caught my eye
"This crisis demonstrates the historical failure of Capitalism", cried out Chávez.
Thanks for posting the links. As bad as things are it is a relief to take my mind off of the ludicrous presidential campaign here for a while.

I read somewhere that the food crisis will be a boon for genetically altered crops. I also read somewhere that if we were careful stewards the earth could support a population of fifty billion people.

On Thursday, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson downplayed worries of a domestic food shortage.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson: "In the US, I don’t see food shortages. We have plenty of food in the US. The price of food has gone up, but again that won’t be as significant for the average American as the price of gasoline. But in the world, it is a significant issue, and the United States is focused on getting food to those who need it the most and getting it there quickly, emergency food relief. And we provide about half of that for the world.”

so much for the poor.
I don't think 'Therefore, I am.' Therefore, I am.

Yes, food is a trading commodity now, and that is more important (of course) than people starving.

Continúan las medidas de protesta en las rutas

http://www.pagina12.com.ar/diario/ultim ... 05-12.html

yesterday I went with some bio-quimic friends specialists in aliments to a "Innovative productors" feria in Chabás (some km south of our city, weird but first time for all of us there). There was a piquete in one side of the route, a little tent with people drinking mate below a cartel saying "Cristina is the new plague" with a drawing of a big green insect. Today I also saw downtown some 4 x 4 with the legend "Apoyo al campo"... well... I hope we won´t have as president Mr. Macri for the next period of time... all is still very blurry (and at the same maybe dangerously clear...) and not only because the smoke...
about the feria: it was interesting to know more about hongos & queso (my friends´s specialization !) and to meet also a luthier from Casilda in the middle of that!!!!!!! :)

The population of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania has falled from one million people in 1960 to around three hundred thousand today. There are 14,102 vacant lots in the city. Some local people are planting crops on them. The greening of the rust belt cities. There motto is like think locally act locally.

Not sure if this relates, just a bit good news or at least a ray of hope here.

thanks for reading s-t!!!!!!!! :) the agricultura urbana raised here in the nineties´s crisis. Also the trueque. There is a guvernamental program lead by the I.N.T.A to continue supporting this. Also departments of solidarity-economy in the province and the city (I ate algarroba´s cookies last weekend thanks of that  ).
But I think the process here is still the opposite of what you said. I think we´ll have more years here of increasing population in cities.

some today´s news:

El gobierno rechaza la propuesta de Buzzi (Federación Agraria Argentina)

(I hate to say that I feel somehow like Alberto Fernandez said...)

http://www.pagina12.com.ar/diario/ultim ... 05-14.html

Hasta con las retenciones especulaban...

(no news at all :!: ... hey.... there always were four or five big cereal exportation companies here that did what they want ... I knew that already seventeen year ago after working two months for a cereal consignatarios from the south of Cordoba... )
