you are very creative, friends! you make me think about why venezuela is called venezuela.... no idea!... little venice? second hand venice? two stars venice?... no... it can´t be that!... the spanish and not the italian were the conquerors of these lands.!. The name of an indigenuos etnia?...mmmm... still no idea!

El nombre de Venezuela históricamente se ha atribuido al cartógrafo italiano Américo Vespucio acompañado de Alonso de Ojeda, en una expedición naval de exploración en 1499 por la costa noroccidental del país (hoy conocido como golfo de Venezuela). La tripulación observó las viviendas aborígenes erigidas sobre pilotes de madera que sobresalían del agua construidas por los indígenas añú. Dichas viviendas, que llevaban el nombre de palafitos, recordaron a Vespucio la ciudad de Venecia en Italia ("Venezia" en italiano), lo que le inspiró a dar el nombre de Venezziola o Venezuela (Pequeña Venecia) a la región.

Otras versiones apoyadas por documentos históricos indicarían que el nombre proviene de una voz indígena "Benezuela" (que significa "agua grande") con el que se conocía a una población en el Lago de Maracaibo. Sin embargo, la primera versión sigue siendo, con diferencia, la más aceptada para explicar el origen del nombre del país.

En cambio, Martín Fernández de Enciso, testigo presencial del descubrimiento, en su obra Summa de Geografía, publicada en 1519, explica: “...cerca de la tierra está una piedra grande que es llana encima della. Y encima della está un lugar o casas de indios que se llama Veneciuela...”. De esta manera, el nombre de Venezuela es autóctono y no un diminutivo veneciano.

A mediados de 1498, exactamente el 1 de agosto, tres veleros se acercan por la Isla de Trinidad y tocan las costas venezolanas. Entraron por el Golfo de Paria, por la Boca de la Serpiente o Boca de Drago. Sin saberlo, Cristóbal Colón había llegado a Sur América y contemplaba maravillado las corrientes del río Orinoco. Explorando la parte sur del golfo, le acuñó el sobrenombre de "Tierra de Gracia".
