After having consistently denied that any correlation whatsoever existed between Vietnam and Iraq, Bush's handlers and speechwriters decided to make that "nonexistent" connection a talking point-- by reversing themselves.
Hmmmmmm . . .
Sheldon Richman ( with whom I sometimes violently disagree . . .) has written a short, strong, clear article on the subject :

ja ja "quagmire" another word added to our vocabulary he forgot to mention.
For the all the things that they did wrong, disbanding the Iraqi army was at the end of the day the single greatest blunder after the war itself.
Where can you even begin to talk about the what they got wrong. Wolfowitz blew of the criticism of his estimate of fifty to sixty billion for the cost of the war as wildly inaccurate. No way they could ever be two hundred billion dollars. As a reward for his financila acumen they made him head of the world bank And the guy who disbanded the Iraqi army got a medal.
Oh well. I learned a new word this week
apophany comes to mind when I start connecting news stories together.
I have no idea what will happen. I think I can see what is going to happen. Delay of game until next fall (that is the latest change or flip flop if you will, Petraeus assued congress that the surge would last not more than six months certainly not any thing like 18 months.) So guess how long it will last now. That will put it right around the elections next year.
What did we ever do to deserve living under such interesting times?

We are getting farther and farther from the smell of "reality", Jack.
William Gibson's new book, SPOOK COUNTRY, conjures a bit of the atmosphere created by the GWB ghoulies . . .
You might find it moderately interesting to look at . . .
Good vibes,
