These are always horrifying, depressing accounts for me to read.
The innocents who are crushed by endless unconscionable, toxic, corrupt power struggles. Collateral damage. Hundreds of thousands of human beings.
My only hope is that by some miracle, better days might actually lie ahead, if the Iraqis can eventually settle on a government which is more benign and fair, even if it isn't wholly free of D.C's influence.
It seems the "insurgency" in Iraq will accept nothing except complete U.S. withdrawal and Iraqi autonomy, which would probably lead to an even more intense power struggle and perhaps a full-blown civil war, increasing death and suffering even more. To be fair, at this point in time, the insurgent actions are making it very difficult for the U.S. to rebuild Iraq and to help Iraqis.
But this was all predicted by many experts who advised against the invasion to begin with. There has to be a better way. I think there were other ways to deal with Saddam and the U.N., to disarm Iraq and to help its citizens. But in the end, I don't believe that's what this war was really about.
