The Jante Law

Post by Traveller13 » October 21st, 2007, 9:09 am

1. Don't think you are somebody.
2. Don't think you are as good as us.
3. Don't think you are smarter than us.
4. Don't think you are better than us.
5. Don't think you know more than us.
6. Don't think you are more important than us.
7. Don't think you will ever be anybody.
8. Don't think you can laugh at us.
9. Don't think anybody gives a damn about you.
10. Don't think you can teach us anything.

This law seems to emanate from small Danish towns.
However, it is also spoon-fed to us in more subtle ways.

10. Don't think you can teach us anything.
Are you certain?
It did not seem to apply to scientists.

Science is tricky.
As a scientist I can tell you that I don't believe in black holes or dark matter.
I believe in quarks and all these weird particles that exist in two different places simultaneously, but not because I believe in the way it has been proved. I believe in them because I think it's fun.
On Thursday a university teacher in astrology told me "sometimes, conventional explanations start breaking down, and it is then necessary to invent an explanation to keep minds at peace".
That's how the black hole theory began.
From a fellow phd student from Bangladesh with an applied physics background: "You know, it's like those top gun scientists like Stephen Hawking trying to unify all the theories together, even though we're still not entirely sure that they're all true. Well, let them invent their so-called Theory of Everything. Let them. I don't care."

People who think that science has absolute truth in it are either fools or mislead.

But I'm off topic here.

As for the Jante law, I think it would be the leaders telling the People "don't try to tell us how to do our job".

What are people doing right now?
Are they happy?
Are they in charge of their lives? Are they living their dreams, or looking for a way to live their dreams, or are they rather being told that trying to follow your dreams is stupid, and that obeying to the Laws of the Clan is far more important?
The Jante commandments don't necessarily target the country, but people on an individual scale.
As myself alone, I am nothing.
I can not have an impact on the world. What I see on television and what my parents and neighbos told me so. I want to, but I can't.

I'll continue later.
