Canadian immigration officials ruled, however, that "as mere footsoldiers," US war resisters "could not be held responsible for the breach of international law committed by United States in going to Iraq." Immigration authorities also ruled that "ordinary footsoldiers are not expected to make own personal assessments as to the legality of any conflict they may be called upon to fight." They also said there is no internationally recognized right to object to a particular war.

this is exactly what we are doing, what i did, yet had to couch that into a conscientious objector discharge statement that was not entirely truthful, which is why i ultimately retracted it and resigned, telling them that i supported wars of national liberation like america's and that of the vietnamese people. It's what i wrote when i resigned. They accepted it and let me go.
The former Congressman Ron Dellums D-Oakland, authored a bill thhat would have allowed fr selective conscientious objection.
That the Canadian Government does not recognise this, inspite of the fact that, as a nation, they did not sanction the Iraq War because it had not the approval of the United Nations, yet allowed support naval missions there, and refused to allow American ex-patriots to object on those same grounds within their provenance, is purely hypocritical. Canadians are too detached and non-plussed about this business.

The canadian Supreme Court refused o hear their case because "they would not be at risk of their lives if they returned to the United States, nor were they at risk of "cruel and unusual treatment or punishment."

After losing their appeal at the Supreme Court, Hinzman and Hughey will now receive a "pre-removal risk assessment," which is designed to judge whether in the United States they would be at risk of torture, death or cruel and unusual punishment or treatment.

That's only the beginning of a drawn-out deportation process that could go on for years.

"We still have a bit of time before anyone is looking at getting sent back imminently," Ryan Johnson said.

War resisters can also apply for permanent residency in Canada on humanitarian or compassionate grounds.

Meanwhile, supporters of US soldiers who fled across the northern border are turning their efforts toward the Canadian Parliament, which they hope will pass a law overruling existing policy – despite the opposition of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the National Democratic Party and Bloc Quebecois. If they can get the center-left Liberal Party to go along, supporters say, such a bill could become law without Harper's support.

Since the election of the Progressive Conservative party under Brian Mulroney back in the 80’s, our federal government has been twisted away from the core Canadian values—“Peace, Order, Good Government”—toward supporting the imperialist military agenda of the U.S.

Rather than the image of Canada as a “peacekeeping” nation, we are now engaged in wars of aggression.

We need and deserve a government that reflects the true values of Canadians—and not the values of corporate leaders or the U.S. government.

We need a government that will both refuse to participate in non-peacekeeping military actions, and actively oppose all military aggression throughout the world.

I was drafted for Vietnam in 1965, and two subsequent times also. The third time they discovered I have only one functioning eye. I do not exaggerate. And that discovery depended on a Major who happened to be hanging around the Oakland Afees Induction Center.

One of my good friends had already gone to Canada and become a citizen along with his wife and two kids.

I was ready, and had already made several trips to Victoria, B.C.. to visit. I was set to live in their flower shed.

Pretty place, Victoria-- like a slightly cooler Seattle, but much prettier-- back then.

Since Black Jack Pershing marched to Mexico to guard the oil wells ( at least, and before then, when we were "ridding" the plains of the "Indian Menace"), we've been fancy with our borders.

Canadians are nice folks-- so are plenty of U.S.-ians.

Just the governments get in the way, that's all.

it is a poem about being in exile no matter how wonderful the refugee country is
it is still an exile
combined with post vietnam trauma
i think it is in my book of poems
for those who came home tirededited by wd erhardt
and i believe that the vet in queston has already passed away
