I am not yet willing to panic about Harman's "thought crimes" bill, because as drafted, it does no more than explore whether those thought crimes are a problem. It doesn't create new crimes, although that is presumably the next step. I don't much care for the idea of roving commissions with subpoena power skipping around the country trying to stamp out "radical" ideas on the Internet. But as expensive threats to free speech go, I'll take a time-limited commission over a bill that criminalizes speech. Maybe I'm being shortsighted, but then the Democrats in Congress have taught me to keep my expectations very low. Today, therefore, I am profoundly grateful that instead of criminalizing protected speech outright, Democrats merely form a commission that will do a study, which will in turn christen a Drive-Thru Center for Excellence, where they will someday consider criminalizing protected free speech.

Love the title Center for Excellence. As if naming it right will make it a good institution, an Academy of Counter-Terror.

My favorite government name along these lines, e-dog was:
TOTAL INFORMATION AWARENESS
which was piloted by John ( "Mistakes were made") Poindexter until DARPA ( another fine coinage-- sounds like a boy-loving Allen Ginz organization . . . or at least a Buddhist metaphysical descriptor . . .) purportedly put an end to it.

Rant aside, as to the bill/article...
"violent radicalization and homegrown terrorism"...
Good lord, that's suitably vague and catch-all, isn't it? And very ominous sounding. What responsible (cornered?) politician in his right mind could vote against that? We can't have the people involved in that kind of stuff, can we? (The government hates competition). Only Kucinich and a few of his pals voted against-- they must have something up their sleeves-- better keep an eye out on them...
And the forum responses are even more interesting than the article itself, especially the ones that vilify the bill only because it's just one more needless bit of wasteful (pork) spending by the gov't...

House Intel Committee Subpoenas Ex-Clandestine Head on Tape Destruction
The House Intelligence Committee has subpoenaed the former head of the CIA’s National Clandestine Service to testify about his role in the destruction of tapes documenting the interrogation of two prisoners. Jose Rodriguez has been named as the official who directed that the tapes be destroyed. Rodriguez has been called to appear in January at what would be the first public hearing into the CIA tape scandal. At the White House on Thursday, President Bush declined to tell reporters whether he agreed with the tapes’ destruction. He also said he did not learn about the matter until the New York Times broke the story last week. The New York Times reported this week four top White House lawyers took part in talks on destroying the tapes beginning in 2003.
