I was entertaining myself with that thought a few days ago, 'dog.
The berlin games introduced the torch relay. They introduced alot of pomp to the games. in fairness though, the games were awarded to germany before hitler came to power.
yes. attacking the torch in protest of some unfair regime...
the dalai lama met mao zedong when the former was still studying and mao said to him "religion is a poison" and... I have to agree. but then, extreme political theory and belief is also a poison. the middle way does seem best. that's what the dalai lama preaches. the middle way.
tibet would be shit in the olympic games anyway. they'd trip up over their robes and be quite happy with average times/points/scores, such is the middle way.
I don't see what all this fuss is about. i wasn't even aware that tibet wanted to be a part of the olympic games this much!

The irony of it all is that the annexation of Tibet helped to spread Buddhism around the world by causing all of these Llamas and teachers to flee to the west...

Its not that Tibet wants to join the games, its the People's Republics human rights violations, which is typified by their treatment of Tibet. (Another would be the Huigurs, who are officially a terrorist group yeah! Huigurs around the world are also protesting the games.)
Ironically, the Han Chinese don't see why their treatment of the Tibet is considered wrong by the West. They genuinely believe they are helping them.
When I was in Beijing three years ago, the games were all they could talk about. If world leaders do boycott the opening ceremonies, the Chinese would be humiliated into changing their policies in regard to Tibet, etc. (savings one's face is HUGE in China, especially in a situation where China is being taken seriously by world powers for the first time is a long time). And for anyone who argues that politics should stay out of the games (which is absolutely correct), remember that having the games in Beijing is a political statement for the Chinese.

And for anyone who argues that politics should stay out of the games [...] remember that having the games in Beijing is a political statement for the Chinese.
anyone who thinks that "politics should stay out of the Olympics" is a completely braindead idiot who should take a vow of silence for the foreseeable future.
that's sort of like saying that one should not talk about sex in a whore house.

How so? Obviously politics don't stay out of the Olympics, but why shouldn't they?

well it's the same dilemma as doing biz with nasty people
if we are gonna do biz with them, then why not play with them?
a boycott would only impugn the athelets
china ain't gonna give up tibet any more than america is gonna give up hawaii
bows to the lady lamas

How could politics stay out of Olympics?
Certainly not in its current form -- i.e. flag waving displays of nationalism where athletes represent nation-states.
Hitler presides over the 1936 games.
thats the purest expression of Olympic spirit captured on film by whats-her-name. Games = warfair. Nationalistic propaganda.
The Black Panther salute was only mooment of TRUTH in the recent games.
considr then perhaps the Munich atrocities.
Olympics are political thru and thru. to deny that is to be a servant of Coca-Cola.
Dalai Lama is a weakling. Like Lenin said you must eat an omlet to digest the eggs. or sumthin.
Suckas betta recogniz Bush is in da hous.
