Brief reflection on con-sumerism

I went to the local supermarket yesterday to pick up some things, including eggs (I want to find a local farmer to buy from, but I was desperate). On the left of the shelf are eggs with a big flashy 'ORGANIC' on the package, meaning the hens were fed a vegetarian diet (i.e. natural and healthy), and all the rest of it. Right next to the those are the Cage Free eggs, meaning the chickens did not live their entire lives in a cage under constant lighting to increase productivity, but were allowed to be, you know, chickens. In addition, the Cage Free hens were fed all vegetarian, etc, etc. So, ultimately Cage Free is organic and then some.

The ORGANIC were a full 60 cents more a dozen.
