Not sure if this is "culture" (other than a culture of runaway corporate/economic confusion). Here are consecutive headlines I saw on my ISP's headline ticker today (7/29):

"Home prices drop a record 15.8 percent in May"
"Stocks jump after consumer confidence data"
"Americans remain gloomy about the economy"

wtf?

another 'wtf' hit me today on news scroll:

''evangelists warn mccain against romney as vice president"

warned him? wtf is that!

Well, that must be the Evangelical Right God Army staking out their accustomed GOP Presidential pander. Don't want no Mormon as the Veep, that's for sure.

Those headlines I posted are baffling... Lemme get this straight. Americans are losing their homes and credit in record numbers and/or going upside-down on their mortgages, and Americans remain gloomy about the economy, yet somehow the stock market charges ahead on the strength of "consumer confidence". Yeah. That makes a lot of sense...

The way I see it: those that play the stocks are not concerned about their mortgages nor are they all Americans... Wall Street is open to the world to play in, and indeed they do. While the other folks, those that cannot afford to play any stock market are, unfortunately, the ones that are in econ-hell. Disparity? Absolutely and nothing seems to be on the horizon to change things... which makes it a bit worse.

How can Americans be gloomy about the economy and consumers confident? I took "consumer confidence" to mean American consumer confidence. Maybe that was my misunderstanding?
