It was supposed ot have been built in Texas.

Choosing the site for such an enormous facility was a country-wide effort involving geological and economic studies in 43 states. Though the process was a drawn-out political affair, the final choice seems a natural one; after all, everything's bigger in Texas!
funny that CERN's large hadron collider is in switzerland, then... after all, everything's smaller in switzerland! ;-)

would be intersting to know why exactly the texan project had been cancelled. it surely wasn't merely a matter of interest and money...

It was a political boondoggle
Made more sense to build at Fermi Lab in Illinois where there was existing infrastructure.
But President George Bush the first
was a Texan so there it went.

Maybe that is why it was cancelled once a democrat came in.

I also heard they were having trouble with fire ants.
